Hello. With the question "Can congenital heart disease be detected during pregnancy or does it have to be seen at birth?" The doctor would like to answer the following:
Ultrasound can detect congenital heart diseases in the fetus: Detect congenital heart defects from the fetus when there are good ultrasound facilities, which can detect abnormalities. congenital heart defects earlier than 11-12 weeks. When the mother goes to the antenatal clinic, the doctor will ultrasound check the fetal development
Request an echocardiogram of the fetus. Pregnant women are recommended to have fetal echocardiography when there are abnormal developments during pregnancy: Mother has gestational diabetes Mother has chronic lupus erythematosus Mother has ever given birth to a child with birth defects Father or mother or in the family someone with congenital heart disease Mother infected with rubella, typhus, measles, mumps in the first 3 months of pregnancy Mother worked in a chemical/poisonous environment Mother smoked, drank alcohol, took anti-epileptic drugs, sedation in the first 3 months This is a case where the baby is born with a risk of congenital heart disease, so the mother should have an echocardiogram of the fetus. The mother should also have fetal echocardiography when suspecting that the baby has a chromosomal abnormality (through nuchal translucency measurement, maternal blood test).
You can go directly to the hospital under Vinmec Health System for advice and conduct the above ultrasounds and tests.
Thank you for trusting and sharing your worries with Vinmec. Best regards.
