How is an atrial septal defect treated in a newborn?

Question
Hello doctor,
My baby was born 7 days old, the doctors diagnosed a 5mm atrial septal defect, size 55.0. So please ask the doctor how to treat atrial septal defect in newborns? Is your child's atrial septal defect big or small? Can I close it myself? How long does it take to close on its own? Ask your doctor for advice. Thank you.

Hello,
With the question “How to treat atrial septal defect in infants? ", the doctor would like to answer as follows:
According to the description, the baby has an atrial septal defect, but the hole is not too large, can be monitored. There is a small percentage of self-closing vents, but with very small holes, and this percentage decreases over time. If there is no effect, the baby can be monitored, indicated for treatment when there are signs of hemodynamic disturbances by surgery or closed with instruments.
If you still have questions about atrial septal defect in children, you can go to a hospital of Vinmec Health System for further examination and advice. Thank you for trusting and sending questions to Vinmec. Wishing you lots of health.
Best regards!
