Gallstones treated with drugs or surgery?

Question
Hello doctor,
I have abdominal pain in the epigastrium, spreading to the right side below the ribs. I had an ultrasound and concluded that I have gallstones due to the size of 6×42 mm worms. Doctor let me ask, is gallstones treated with drugs or surgery? What is the recovery time like?

Answered by Specialist Doctor II Nguyen Van Nghia - Gastroenterologist - General Surgery Department, Central Park International General Hospital.
Hello,
With the question "Can gallstones be treated with drugs or surgery?", the doctor would like to answer as follows:
Your gallstones already have symptoms and need to be treated. Currently, the treatment of symptomatic gallstones with laparoscopic surgery will remove the gallbladder with stones and causing symptoms. In case you have stones suspected of worms, surgery is the only solution. Previously, when the worms got into the gallbladder, at that time you had a lot of pain in the right epigastrium and lower abdomen, gallstones caused by worms would be at risk of causing bacterial cholecystitis and biliary tract infections. Recovery time after surgery about 1 week you can return to work. You should consult with a specialist at Central Park International General Hospital for detailed advice and appropriate treatment.
If you still have questions about gallstones, you can go to the hospital of Vinmec Health System for further examination and advice. Thank you for trusting and sending questions to Vinmec. Wishing you lots of health.
Best regards!
