People with diabetes, high blood pressure can treat heart valve stenosis by dilating the heart valve with a percutaneous balloon?

Question
Hello doctor,
My mother is 60 years old, has diabetes and high blood pressure for 7 years. Currently hospitalized for treatment of heart valve stenosis. I don't know if people with diabetes, high blood pressure can treat heart valve stenosis by dilating the heart valve with a percutaneous balloon? Seek medical advice!

Hello,
With the question "Can people with diabetes and high blood pressure treat heart valve stenosis by dilating the heart valve with a percutaneous balloon?", the doctor would like to answer as follows:
Heart has 4 valves: mitral valve, tricuspid valve, aortic valve and pulmonary valve. You don't say which valve your mother has, so we can only guess that your mother has mitral stenosis - the valve that is most common due to complications from rheumatic disease or rheumatic heart disease in people of your age .
When mitral stenosis is indicated for percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty, hypertension and diabetes are associated, then before performing the dilation procedure, it is necessary to stabilize these 2 diseases.
Percutaneous balloon mitral dilatation will attempt to separate the leaflets from each other to relieve the obstruction.
This is the technique of inserting a balloon-headed catheter from the inferior vena cava into the right atrium, through the atrial septum to the left atrium, and then down to the left ventricle. When at the level of the mitral valve, the balloon will be inflated up and down gradually in increasing sizes to expand the waist of the balloon causing separation of the two valve edges until the desired result is achieved.
Percutaneous mitral stenosis is preferred because:
High success rate, few complications through many studies. Significant improvement in hemodynamic status and valve orifice area. There are immediate results, and at long-term follow-up even more so compared to valve dissection in both closed and open hearts. Percutaneous mitral valve angioplasty is a less invasive procedure, with many advantages compared to surgery such as: short hospital stay, less pain, no scar on the chest, more comfortable psychology... Mitral stenosis dilation Percutaneous surgery is performed in some special situations where surgery is difficult to succeed completely or high risk such as: in pregnant women, in people with severe heart failure, in patients in an emergency situation.. At Vinmec Times City Hospital in Hanoi, we have performed dilation of the mitral valve stenosis for some patients with hypertension and associated diabetes, with very good results.
If you still have questions about the treatment of valvular stenosis, you can go to a hospital of Vinmec Health System for further examination and advice. Thank you for trusting and sending questions to Vinmec. Wish you a lot of health.
Best regards!
