Quiz about type 2 diabetes and heart health
Cardiovascular complications are the leading cause of death for people with diabetes, responsible for two-thirds of deaths in people with type 2 diabetes. Join us for a quick answer. The following multiple choice questions will help you understand more about type 2 diabetes and heart health.
What is type 2 diabetes?
Everyone has some amount of glucose (sugar) in their blood and your body needs it to make energy. Normally, the body breaks down food into glucose and releases it into the bloodstream. Insulin, a hormone made by your pancreas, helps glucose move from your blood into cells where it can be used for energy.
If you have type 2 diabetes, your body does not use insulin effectively. This is called insulin resistance. Initially, the pancreas makes extra insulin to make up for it. However, over time, the pancreas will no longer be able to maintain it and cannot make enough insulin to keep blood sugar in the normal range.
How will type 2 diabetes affect me?
Type 2 diabetes can lead to other health problems such as heart disease, stroke, nerve damage, and kidney or eye problems. The good news, however, is that keeping blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol within target ranges can help prevent or slow the onset of these health problems. If you don't reach your goal, change your plan to stay on track. Ask your healthcare provider to provide you with tools to help you record your readings.
What is cardiovascular disease?
