7 foods to eat during a Crohn's disease flare-up

Article written by MSc Mai Vien Phuong - Department of Medical Examination & Internal Medicine, Vinmec Central Park International General Hospital

The foods you eat can have an impact on the severity of your Crohn's symptoms. Here are some foods that people with Crohn's have reported on benefits. By eating one or more of these foods during a relapse, you may be able to get relief from your symptoms.

1. Yogurt

Raw cultured yogurt can be an ideal food to eat if you have Crohn's disease. Probiotics in yogurt can help restore bowels.
You may want to avoid yogurt if you find yourself having trouble digesting dairy proteins, as this can make Crohn's diarrhea and bloating symptoms worse.

2. Oily fish

Oily fish like salmon, tuna, and herring may help relieve some of your Crohn's symptoms. Certain types of oily fish contain omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties and may help alleviate the condition that makes your symptoms worse.

3. Fruits and vegetables

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help ease your symptoms. If raw fruit makes your flare-ups worse, try apple and banana sauce. Both are good for you and can satisfy cravings for sweets.

4. Cooked Carrots

For many people with Crohn's, carrots can be a great vegetable to provide nutrients without aggravating symptoms.
During a Crohn's disease flare, be sure to cook carrots until they are soft and tender, as cooked carrots are not only easy to digest but also contain antioxidants that can help treat Crohn's symptoms.

5. Cereals

If you have Crohn's disease, you may find it helpful to avoid grains that are high in fiber, especially whole grains or whole wheat.
However, there are some cereals with low fiber content that will help you get the nutrition you need. These include refined grains, such as cream of wheat, and dry grains, such as tortillas and rice cakes.

6. Potatoes

Like bananas, potatoes are an excellent source of potassium and can help your body maintain fluid balance while you're controlling a flare-up.

7. Low-fiber foods and more

If you're looking to reduce your Crohn's symptoms through diet, look for foods low in fiber and soluble fiber, which tend to be easier on the digestive system.
You may also want to take a vitamin supplement during this time to make sure you're getting the nutrition you need to reduce inflammation.
Talk to your doctor about your diet, taking vitamins and supplements, and any other questions you may have regarding your Crohn's symptoms.
Your doctor may refer you to a dietitian for extra help with meal planning.
