Chorionic villus biopsies – a method of early fetal diagnosis

A chorionic villus biopsy (CVS) is a procedure performed in early pregnancy to find chromosomal abnormalities. The procedure is done when the baby's mother or father has a genetic disease that runs in the family. The chorionic villus sampling test is one of the invasive tests that gives highly accurate results.

Screening for fetal malformations from the 12th week of pregnancy

In the first pregnancy, Ms. Bui Thi Kim Oanh had to terminate the pregnancy due to congenital hemolysis in the fetus. In the first weeks, the results of ultrasound screening for fetal abnormalities are not unusual. However, by the 28th week of pregnancy, the fetus had hydrocephalus, the whole body of the fetus accumulated fluid. After checking for the cause, the fetus was found to have congenital hemolysis - a disease inherited from the father. and mother, can cause 25% of fetuses to develop hydrops. Ms. Oanh was forced to terminate the pregnancy after that.
To ensure safety in the next pregnancy, Ms. Oanh was advised by her doctor to screen embryos before transferring embryos by IVF to avoid being like the first fetus. But then, she became pregnant naturally before planning to transfer embryos. Fearing that the fetus could be caught again this time, she went to the doctor very early and was advised to amniocentesis at 17 weeks pregnant. She needs to wait more than a month before she can have an amniocentesis.
While the family was worried and impatient, Ms. Oanh was introduced to the Center for Fetal Medicine - Vinmec Times City International Hospital to perform chorionic villus biopsies - a method of checking for abnormalities. The fetus can be performed very early from week 12 by inserting a fine needle through the wall of the mother's abdomen, into the placental area, taking a small amount of placental tissue for testing.
Fortunately, the fetal test results do not carry congenital hemolytic disease, confirmed through modern genetic testing methods on the obtained placental samples.

Vinmec is the only hospital in the North that performs chorionic villus sampling technique

Master, Doctor Nguyen Ngoc Tu - Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Vinmec Times International Hospital said: The chorionic villus biopsy test is to take a little placental tissue from the mother's uterus. The placental sample is obtained with a needle or catheter through the abdomen. During this procedure, the woman is numbed to relieve pain and relieve stress. Chorionic villus sampling is known as an early diagnosis method, helping pregnant women to wait more than 1 month compared to amniocentesis. This method is also applied to most cases of fetal anomalies at 12 weeks: such as increased nuchal translucency, abnormal fetal abnormalities, high-risk NIPT...

Vinmec International General Hospital is the first unit to specify the technique and also the only unit in the North to perform this technique, Vinmec has performed hundreds of procedures, helping pregnant women and their families have early diagnosis, thereby having more choice and peace of mind when monitoring pregnancy. Avoid excessive anxiety that can affect fetal brain development.
With a low risk of miscarriage ~ 1/400 (equivalent to amniocentesis), chorionic villus sampling technique has become the routine technique of choice in advanced hospitals around the world.
