"I feel like I've grown up" following lumbar spondylosis surgery

Few people are aware that Uncle Pham Ngoc Son, a retired military officer from Quang Ninh who is 72 years old, has degenerative lumbar illness from the way he walks and the minimal assistance equipment he uses. I had to stop every hundred meters of walking for almost twenty years due to pain.

I never imagined having surgery so close to home was really conceivable

Uncle Son recalled that despite getting regular checkups thanks to his military insurance, his lumbar spondylosis did not get better. Uncle had to bend his back while moving quickly, and even in the last two or three years, the sickness began to manifest as Horsetail Syndrome. The discomfort required him to stop every 100 meters and take a break. When his sickness worsened, he wanted to seek treatment at major military hospitals because he had once been an army officer and had tremendous faith in military medical professionals. Moving around is challenging enough as it is, never mind traveling far.

At the time, the city's insurance recipients were screened by Vinmec Hai Phong International General Hospital. According to the MRI findings, Mr. Son had significant lumbar spondylolisthesis, including disc protrusion, waist opening in the L4 vertebrae, and spinal stenosis from L5 to S1. As a result of this finding, the doctor at Vinmec Hai Phong stated: "This is a challenging case; in order to have successful recovery outcomes, surgery must be performed with the assistance of the C-arm machine. Dura tears and spinal cord injury result in permanent paralysis.

Fortunately, Mr. Son was asked to help with diagnosis and treatment by Assoc, Professor Dr. Luu Hong Hai, Head of General Surgery at Vinmec Hai Phong International General Hospital and former Director of the Orthopedic Injury and Orthopedics Institute of 108 Military Central Hospital. Mr. Son readily agreed. surgery is a given.

After a week in the hospital and rehabilitation after surgery, he has not yet needed to use a stroller after two months and is able to walk normally with the use of a cane. I feel like I have grown up after surgery, my uncle said with joy. Prior to that, I had a hunchback from pain and was 1m51 in height. I can now stand upright and take another 1m53 measurement. It's no longer painful to sit down or stand up. I am very happy to be able to have surgery so close to home, especially with good care and treatment by Dr. Luu Hong Hai."

Uncle Son was happy to see us; he healed swiftly and nearly didn't want any assistance.

What contributes to the surgery's success?

In Vietnam, where lumbar spondylosis is a highly frequent condition, a patient's doctor may recommend surgery if their symptoms are so severe and persistent that other treatments are ineffective. Or if a pinched nerve needs to be freed because failure to do so could result in permanent paralysis, severe weakness, or loss of control over one's bowels or bladder in a timely manner.

According to Professor Associate Dr. Luu Hong Hai, "Uncle Son's operation is successful and progressing well because of two key elements. The length of the patient's recovery depends on the aseptic procedures used in the operating room to reduce the danger of infection. Additionally, the C-arm machine's support serves to pinpoint the precise surgical position, guarantee standard operation, and reduce difficulties and confusion during surgery. Therefore, patients who have surgical indications can rest comfortable that surgery will completely treat their ailment, prevent excruciating pain, and cause no complications with other medical conditions. C-arm implementation in practice For the residents of Quang Ninh and the neighboring areas, it is much more convenient at Vinmec Hai Phong Hospital.

A C-arm support is necessary during lumbar spine surgery, which is a large procedure demanding high precision. Extra-capsular needles are used at Vinmec Hospital to provide postoperative pain treatment so that patients can begin exercising without experiencing any discomfort. At Vinmec Hai Phong Hospital, Uncle Ban is just one of many instances that have been successfully treated with this procedure. Since it avoids most of the drawbacks of open surgery, it also improves the accuracy and effectiveness of care.
