Maginex: Uses, indications and precautions when using

Maginex is a mineral supplement used to prevent and treat hypomagnesemia. Some preparations are also used to treat symptoms of too much stomach acid such as upset stomach, heartburn, and acid indigestion. Magnesium is important for the normal functioning of cells, nerves, muscles, bones and the heart.

Usually, a balanced diet will ensure normal blood magnesium levels. However, some situations cause the body to lose magnesium faster than you can get it from your diet. These situations include treatment with "water pills" (diuretics such as furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), poor diet, alcoholism, or other medical conditions (e.g., severe diarrhea/vomiting, and stomach/intestinal problems, poorly controlled diabetes).

Unless otherwise indicated by the product instructions or your doctor, it is best to take magnesium supplements with meals to relieve abdominal pain and diarrhea .
Take each dose with a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters) unless your doctor directs you otherwise. Swallow the extended-release capsules in the bloodstream and the slow-release/enteric-soluble capsules or the whole capsule. Do not crush or chew extended-release or slow-release/enteric-dissolving capsules. This releases the entire drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects. In addition, extended-release tablets must not be broken down unless they are marked with dosing lines and directed to do so by your doctor or pharmacist. No need to chew or crush the tablet swallow it whole

If you are using the liquid product, use a measuring device to measure the dose carefully. Do not use a household spoon as it will give you an incorrect dose. Shake the suspension bottle well before each dose.
Use Maginex regularly to get the most benefit from it. Remember to take your medicine at the right time each day. Dosage is calculated based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not increase the dose or frequency of use more than directed on the product packaging or by your doctor. High blood magnesium can cause serious side effects.

Tell your doctor right away if symptoms of hypomagnesemia (eg, muscle cramps, fatigue, irritability, depression) persist or worsen. If you think you are having a serious medical problem, seek medical attention right away.
Abdominal pain and diarrhea may occur when using the drug. Taking this product with meals helps reduce these effects. If one of these effects persists or gets worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist right away.
If your doctor has directed you to use Maginex, remember that he or she has judged that the benefit to you outweighs the risk of side effects. Many people who use Maginex have no serious side effects.
A very serious allergic reaction to the drug Maginex is very rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any suspected symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: Rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/ throat), severe dizziness and trouble breathing.

Magnesium can bind to some drugs, preventing their complete absorption. If you are taking a tetracycline-type drug (such as demeclocycline, doxycycline, minocycline, tetracycline), separate the timing of the dose from that of the magnesium supplement by at least 2 to 3 hours. If you are taking a bisphosphonate (eg, alendronate), thyroid medicine (eg, levothyroxine), or a quinolone-type antibiotic (eg, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin), ask your doctor or pharmacist about how often you should wait between doses and for help finding a dosing schedule that works for all of your medicines.
Check the labels on all your herbal/prescription and over-the-counter products (e.g. antacids, laxatives, vitamins) as they may contain magnesium. Ask your pharmacist before using such products safely.
