Aspirin helps prevent blood clots due to its antiplatelet effect, an important stage in blood clot formation. However, when using aspirin also has potential undesirable effects.

1. What is the role of aspirin?

Aspirin (also known as acetylsalicylic acid) has been widely used in the world since the early 19th century with its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic effects. Thereafter, aspirin was rapidly used in the long term for secondary prevention of myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke due to scientific evidence of its ability to reduce cardiovascular mortality in these patients. . Aspirin helps prevent thrombus formation due to its antiplatelet effect, an important stage in blood clot formation.

2. Should everyone take aspirin?

Similar to other drugs, aspirin use also has potential undesirable effects including anaphylaxis, allergies, peptic ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, hearing loss, etc. Use of aspirin in cardiovascular diseases requires a doctor's prescription. The use of aspirin as a "cardiovascular tonic" does not bring benefits, but also has potential dangers.
Be especially careful when using aspirin if you have a history of peptic ulcer or advanced peptic ulcer, bronchial asthma or a history of allergy to other anti-inflammatory analgesics. The use of aspirin in pregnant women, the elderly and children should be carefully considered and prescribed by a doctor.

3. Usual dose of aspirin in cardiovascular diseases

The common daily dose of aspirin for secondary prevention of myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke is 75-100 mg/day. Using higher doses is not more effective and increases the risk of side effects.
In case of a missed dose, take it as soon as you remember, if it is too close to the next dose (< 6 hours), you can skip the missed dose, no need to take a make up dose.
If you accidentally overdosed, you should contact your doctor or pharmacist for direct advice. Manifestations of drug overdose are common with very high doses (≥ 200 mg/kg body weight in adults).

4. How to use aspirin rationally

Take it only when prescribed and taking the right dose are the most important points when using aspirin. Typically, aspirin is usually formulated as an enteric coated drug to reduce digestive irritation. If you are not told by your doctor to chew the tablet directly (in some special cases), you should swallow the tablet whole, do not crush it with a large glass of water (≥200ml of water).
Should be used after meals, at a fixed time of the day to avoid forgetting the medicine. Avoid taking other anti-inflammatory pain relievers without consulting your doctor, as this can reduce the effectiveness of the medication or increase the risk of side effects.
