Topical dinoprostone is used in some pregnant women to relax the muscles of the cervix (opening the uterus) in preparation for labor in late pregnancy.

Set tablet:
Dosage is 1 10mg tablet designed to release at approximately 0.3 mg/hour over a 12-hour period;
Gel:
Nasal examination will show the degree of discharge which will correct the size of the shielded endocrine catheter to be used. A 20mm endocervical catheter should be used if a drain is not available and a 10mm catheter should be used if the cervix is ​​50% dislocated. Cervidil should be handled with care to avoid skin contact. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after use. The patient should remain in the supine position for at least 15 to 30 minutes to minimize leakage from the cervical canal. If the desired response is achieved, the recommended interval before giving IV oxytocin is 6 to 12 hours. If there is no cervical/uterine response to the initial dose of cervical gel, a repeat dose may be given. The recommended repeat dose is 0.5 mg with a dosing interval of 6 hours. The need for additional doses and durations should be determined by the attending physician based on the course of clinical events. The maximum recommended cumulative dose in a 24-hour period is 1.5 mg of this drug.

Situations in which Cervidil should not be used:
Hypersensitivity to prostaglandins, or if active genital herpes with a vaginal lesion, placenta or if the tubules have broken.
