Uses of Newgala

Newgala drug belongs to the group of psychotropic drugs with the main ingredient galantamine commonly used to treat diseases related to blood vessels, dementia, and to support the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. So how does Newgala work specifically?

1. What is Newgala?

Newgala drug has the main ingredient galantamine hydrobromide which is a tertiary alkaloid - a competitive, selective and reversible inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase thereby inhibiting this enzyme and enhancing the acetylcholine system. Not only that, the drug also binds to a part of nicotine receptors to increase acetylcholine activity, thereby increasing the efficiency of nerve signal transmission, regulating many brain cells to improve control, excitability and attention functions. attention, especially in patients with Alzheimer's-type dementia.
Because of the slowing of cognitive and functional impairment, the effects of galantamine are clinically appropriate for use in patients with Alzheimer's, a serious disorder with progressive dementia. Galantamine works by inhibiting the production of acetylcholinesterase, a substance known to cause dementia in Alzheimer's disease. On the other hand, the drug also increases the brain's response to acetylcholine, which plays a role in cognition. The second mechanism of action is that galantamine increases the release of the transmitter chemical - acetylcholine as well as helps brain cells secrete more acetylcholine. Although it does not cure Alzheimer's disease, the drug helps to reduce the symptoms of the disease
Newgala drug is usually indicated in the following cases:
Dementia due to vascular origin. Mild to severe form of Alzheimer's dementia, with or without cerebrovascular involvement. Newgala is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to galantamine or any of its excipients, as well as in patients with severe liver and kidney failure.

2. Dosage of Newgala

Newgala is usually taken twice a day, should be taken in the morning and evening, make sure to drink enough water during the course of taking the drug. Depending on the subjects and treatment goals, the dose of Newgala will be different, specifically as follows:
Starting dose: 4mg/time x 2 times/day for 4 weeks. Initial maintenance dose: 8mg twice daily for at least 3 weeks. Increase the maintenance dose to a maximum of 24 mg/day and must be properly weighed against clinical benefit and tolerability. There was no rebound effect after abrupt discontinuation of treatment (possibly for surgical reasons). Children should not use Newgala because there are not enough data on the effect of the drug in this group of patients. Galantamine concentrations may be increased in plasma in patients with moderate to severe hepatic or renal impairment. In patients with moderate hepatic impairment, the usual starting dose is 4 mg once daily for at least 1 week. The patient should then be switched to 4 mg twice daily for at least 4 weeks, the daily dose should not exceed 16 mg No dose adjustment is necessary for patients with creatinine clearance greater than 9 mL/min Consideration Dose reduction in patients with concomitant use of strong CYP2D6 or CYP3A4 inhibitors. Overdose of Newgala may produce symptoms similar to those of overdose with other cholinergic stimulants, with central nervous system effects. , the parasympathetic system and the neuromuscular plexus. In addition to muscle weakness, localized muscle tremor also causes severe vomiting, gastrointestinal spasm, increased salivation, lacrimation, bradycardia, hypotension, convulsions. Conventional supportive treatment measures are used in all cases of Newgala overdose. In severe cases, anticholinergics such as atropine are used as antidotes to drugs that stimulate the cholinergic system.

3. Newgala drug side effects

In some patients when using Newgala may experience side effects such as:
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, indigestion. Anorexia, fatigue, dizziness. Headache, somnolence. Weight loss. Confusion, falls. Rhinitis. Urinary tract infection. Insomnia. Additional use of antiemetics and adequate fluid intake may be helpful in these cases. Tremors are often caused by irregular drug treatment. Rare: Syncope, bradycardia.

4. Be careful when using Newgala

Some general notes when using Newgala:
The treatment of Alzheimer's patients with Newgala is associated with weight loss. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the patient's condition during treatment. Due to the pharmacological effects, drugs that stimulate the cholinergic system can have an effect on the tone of the vagus nerve on the heart. Therefore, Newgala should be used with caution in patients with sinus node insufficiency syndrome, with supraventricular conduction disturbances, or concurrently taking significant heart rate-lowering drugs such as digoxin and beta-blockers. For patients at risk for the onset of peptic ulcer disease, close monitoring is required to detect symptoms in time. However, galantamine does not usually cause an increased incidence of peptic ulceration and bleeding. Use Newgala with caution in patients with a history of severe asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Newgala should not be used in patients with urinary tract obstruction or recovering from bladder surgery. Galantamine may cause dizziness and drowsiness, affecting the ability to drive and use machines. Galantamine should only be used in pregnant women when the benefits outweigh the risks. Galantamine should not be used by women who are breastfeeding.
