2. Uses of the drug Vacosulfa B


Vacosulfa B drug contains the main ingredient is sodium sulfacetamide - a derivative of sulfonamide that is easily soluble in water, giving a neutral solution, so it is less irritating to the conjunctiva than other sulfonamides.
Sodium sulfacetamide is bacteriostatic, but in very high concentrations can have a bactericidal effect. Sulfonamides prevent bacteria from using para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) or para-aminobenzoic glutamic acid in the biosynthesis of folic acid, which is essential for the growth of susceptible bacteria.
Only bacteria that synthesize folic acid themselves are inhibited by sulfonamides, bacteria that are able to use folic acid precursors or available folic acid are not affected by sulphonamides.
In vitro, sulfonamides have a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (Streptococcus, Pneumococcus) and Gram-negative bacteria (Meningococcus, Gonococcus, E.Coli, Shigella)...
In general, Vacosulfa B is effective. Bactericidal against susceptible bacteria in the following cases:
