Uses of Lacovir

Lacovir drug is made in the form of a topical cream, with the main ingredient in 1 tube of 5g containing 50mg of Acyclovir. So what is the effect of Lacovir and how is it used?

1. Effects of Lacovir

The main ingredient of Lacovir is acyclovir, which is a nucleoside analogue (acycloguanosin), which has a selective effect on cells infected with the Herpes virus. To be effective, acyclovir must be phosphorylated to the active form, acyclovir triphosphate.
In the first stage, acyclovir is converted to acyclovir monophosphate by a viral enzyme called thymidinekinase, which is then converted to acyclovir diphosphate and triphosphate by a number of other cellular enzymes. Acyclovir triphosphate inhibits viral DNA synthesis and viral replication without affecting normal cellular metabolism.
The effect of Acyclovir is strongest against Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV - 1) and less effective against Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV - 2), Varicella zoster virus (VZV); Acyclovir has the weakest effect on cytomegalovirus (CMV).
Clinically, Acyclovir has not been found to be effective in patients with CMV infection. The efficacy of acyclovir against Epstein Barr virus is still unknown. During the course of treatment, some drug-resistant strains of virus and Herpes simplex virus latent in the lymph nodes were not destroyed.
Acyclovir has good effect in the treatment of severe encephalitis caused by HSV-1 virus, the mortality rate in this case can be reduced from 70% to 20%. In some patients who are cured, serious complications of the disease are also reduced. Milder forms of encephalitis caused by HSV-2 can also be treated well with acyclovir.
