Professor, Ph.D, MD Fernando J F Martinez

About

Professor Fernando J F Martinez received his medical degree from the  FAMERP in Sao Jose do Rio Preto in 1986. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Sao Paulo in 1989. He continued his medical training at A.C Camargo Cancer Center in Sao Paulo and finished his Hematology and Oncology fellowship in 1992. Dr. Martinez is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Oncology.
He belongs to the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), Brazilian Society of Clinical Oncology (SBOC), Brazilian Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation (SBTMO) and Brazilian Society of Cancerology (SBC), and is an active member from SIOP (Société Internationale d’Oncologie Pediatric).
He defended his Master’s Degree in 1996, in a Cotutelle program organized between Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and the Ezra M. Greenspan Chair in Clinical Cancer Therapeutics at the Cancer Chemotherapy Foundation at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. He subsequently defended his Ph.D. Thesis in Biological Sciences with: “Mathematical Modeling in Cancer. Predictive factors in Cancer Response to Chemotherapy”, the Institute of Biological Sciences and Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and the second Ph.D. Thesis defense in Experimental Oncology “Phase II Study – Efficacy and toxicity evaluation of UFT and Tegafur associated to LV, comparing two different administration schedules as treatment of metastatic colon cancer”.
Dr. Martinez has spent more than 35 years treating a wide range of oncologic and hematologic disorders in University Teaching Hospitals and Private Practice in Brazil and internationally. His domains of expertise include Breast cancer, Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcomas, Prostate Cancer, Gastric Cancer, Colon and Rectal Cancers, non-Hodgkin Lymphomas, Head and Neck Cancers, and Lung Cancer.
He worked in major medical institutions such as Gustave Roussy Institute, European Hospital Georges Pompidou, and Brugmann University Hospital.
Throughout this trajectory, he has focused on Personalized Medicine, seeking to reflect, know, and prioritize the importance of patients’ well-being and quality of life – with strict adherence to protocol guidelines and adapting the situation when necessary.
"Treatment of cancer patients must be based on the person, a personalized and evidence-centered context. Therapeutic strategies must respect and be defined in the knowledge of the patient, as an individual being able to meet the most authentic wishes of each one, valuing what is important for the patient according to their sociocultural values," Doctor Martinez defines his clinical practice.
He is now the Medical Director of the Oncology Center at Vinmec Central Park International Hospital.
