Can a 1mm ventricular septal defect close on its own?

Ask
Hello doctor. I am 33 weeks pregnant, ultrasound detected 1mm ventricular septal defect. The doctor asked me if the septum can close on its own? How long does it take to self-close? If the vent does not close by itself, what are the signs and measures to detect and intervene as soon as possible? Ask your doctor for advice. Thank you doctor!

Answer
Hello. Some ventricular septal defects (muscular, membranous) have a self-closing rate, especially with small septal holes. It is impossible to determine when to close, so you need to have regular medical examinations.
Echocardiography is a safe and effective method to monitor holes in your heart. From there, your doctor will give you a specific treatment plan.
Thank you for your question to Vinmec Health System. Best regards.
