Is 78-year-old high blood pressure dangerous after drinking coffee?
Question
Hello doctor,
My father is 78 years old, normal blood pressure is 140-160. Today my blood pressure increased to 184 after taking antihypertensive drugs and drinking a cup of coffee to increase blood pressure to 194-190 until noon and still did not lower and took another dose. Tonight still measure 194. So the doctor let me ask the 78-year-old high blood pressure after drinking dangerous coffee? How to handle? Thank you doctor.

Hi,
With the question “Is 78-year-old high blood pressure dangerous after drinking coffee? ", the doctor replied as follows:
Your baseline blood pressure (140-160 mmHg) is still high, your blood pressure is not well controlled, it may be because the medication you are treating has not been as effective as desired. . On the other hand, coffee or drinks that contain caffeine or stimulants can increase blood pressure. Therefore, it should not be used frequently. You should take your father to see a cardiologist for advice and treatment (change medication or change blood pressure medication) to better control.
If you still have questions about the 78-year-old's high blood pressure after drinking coffee, you can go to a medical facility under Vinmec Health System for early examination and treatment. Thank you for trusting and sending questions to Vinmec. Wish you a lot of health.
Best regards!
