Answer
Hi,
ALT (SGPT) is found mostly in the liver. Although not the only enzyme present in the liver, the liver is where it is most concentrated. It is released into the bloodstream in the presence of liver damage. When liver enzymes increase 2 times higher than normal or higher, you need to visit your doctor soon to have the right treatment to help reduce the amount of liver enzymes to avoid dangerous liver complications. The higher the level of liver enzymes, the greater the likelihood of liver damage. Therefore, it can be considered as a relatively specific indicator of liver status.
The normal range of ALT is < 35 U/L in women and < 50 U/L in men.
In your case, the SGPT 40 U/L is slightly above the normal limit, not a problem if you are completely healthy, have no comorbidities and are not taking medication. However, to accurately evaluate the results, you need to be examined by a specialist and combined with other laboratory results.
You can go to medical facilities or hospitals of Vinmec Health System to be examined by a doctor and have in-depth advice. Thank you for trusting and sharing your concerns with Vinmec. Wishing you good health always.
