Is it abnormal to have a lump of meat after tonsillectomy?

Question
Hello doctor,
I've had my tonsils removed for 31 years, now the left side has lumps of flesh around it, no pain. Doctor let me ask, is the lump of flesh after tonsillectomy abnormal? Should I go back and cut? Thank you doctor.

Answered by Master, Doctor Nguyen Vinh Toan - Ear - Nose - Throat Doctor - Interspecialty Department, Vinmec Times City International Hospital.
Hello friend,
With the question "Is the lump of flesh after tonsillectomy abnormal?", the doctor would like to answer as follows:
The tonsils are only lymphoid tissue, when removed, there are still surrounding lymphoid tissues like the area. the base of the tongue, the posterior pharyngeal wall, and some in the lateral wall, especially the lower pole of the tonsils. Therefore, there may be lumps of flesh that, as you say, are usually not dangerous and do not require re-cutting. If you still feel worried, you can visit directly with an Ear - Nose - Throat specialist for detailed diagnosis and advice.
If you still have questions about tonsils, you can go to a hospital under Vinmec Health System for further examination and advice. Thank you for trusting and sending questions to Vinmec. Wishing you lots of health.
Best regards!
