Dear madam, thank you for submitting your question to Vinmec Health System. Normally before pregnancy, a woman's iron requirement is at least 15mg/day. During pregnancy, the need increases to about 30mg/day. The safest and richest source of iron for pregnant women is the daily foods. Iron is found in red meats such as heart, liver, poultry, fish, clams, oysters, egg yolks and legumes, whole grains, dark green leafy vegetables, broccoli, pumpkin and dried fruit. Foods of animal origin are considered to be better sources of iron absorption than plant-based foods. In addition to iron supplementation through daily foods, pregnant women should also use iron supplements. Iron supplements for pregnant women usually come in 2 forms: inorganic iron (Iron sulfate) and organic iron (Iron fumarate and ferrous gluconate). In which, organic iron is more easily absorbed and less constipating than inorganic iron.
