Uses of Ambuxolol

Ambuxol is a drug that thins mucus and is used in diseases of the respiratory tract with abnormally increased mucus. Thanks to its mucus-thinning effect, the body eliminates phlegm effectively.

1. What is the effect of ambuxol?

The main ingredient of Ambuxol is Ambroxol hydrochloride. Prepared in many different forms and strengths such as:
Tablets, oral is Ambroxol 30mg. Solution, orally: 30mg/5ml 15mg/2ml injection and 15mg/2ml inhaler Ambroxol hydrochloride is a metabolite of Bromhexin, which has similar effects to Bromhexin. The drug has the effect of increasing bronchial secretions, stimulating the ciliary body, facilitating the formation of secretions and exiting the alveolar surface and the larynx. The drug also acts on the gel phase of mucus by cleavage of disulfur bridges of glycoproteins. From there, it thins the sputum, reduces its consistency, and is easier to move to expel the sputum through the cough reflex.

2. Indications and contraindications of Ambuxol

Indications:
The drug helps to loosen phlegm, relieve respiratory mucus, should be indicated in the following cases:
Acute and chronic conditions on the respiratory tract accompanied by abnormal bronchial secretions. Especially in bronchospasm, chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma. Patients after surgery or in the emergency room for lung complications. Contraindications:
Do not use the drug for patients:
Hypersensitivity to any component of the drug. The patient has an advanced peptic ulcer.

3. How to use and dose Ambuxol

How to use: The drug is taken orally or in other ways depending on the dosage form. When taken orally directly and should be taken after meals.
Dosage:
Initial treatment phase:
Adults and children > 12 years old: Use 30mg x 3 times/day or 60mg x 2 times/day. Children from 6 to 12 years old: Use 30mg and use 2-3 times / day. Children from 2 to 6 years old: 15mg x 3 times/day. Oral solution should be used because the tablet form is difficult to divide and the child cannot swallow. Children < 2 years: Use only when prescribed by a doctor, with the recommended dose of 15mg x 2 times / day. The oral solution should also be used. In case of severe acute respiratory disease or initiating treatment in patients with chronic respiratory disease, higher doses can be used, for 10-12 days. It is still common during this period of treatment for 4-5 days. Maintenance treatment phase:
Adults and children > 12 years old: Take 15mg x 3 times/day. Reduce by half if used for a long time. Children from 6 to 12 years old: Use 15mg and use 2-3 times / day. Children from 2 to 6 years old: dose is 7.5mg x 3 times/day. Reduce to half with prolonged use. Children < 2 years old: use only when prescribed by a doctor. The duration of maintenance therapy depends on the patient's condition.

4. Undesirable effects of the drug Ambuxol

During the use of the drug you may also encounter adverse effects such as:
Common: Causes heartburn, sometimes nausea, vomiting. Uncommon: Rash and other allergic conditions, altered taste. Rare: Severe acute anaphylactic reaction; dry mouth, increased transaminases. If you see any unwanted effects, you should immediately notify a qualified doctor or pharmacist so that they can be treated promptly. In severe cases, immediate medical attention is required.

5. Notes when using Ambuxol

Caution should be exercised when administering the drug to patients who already have ulcers in the gastrointestinal tract and in cases where the patient is coughing up blood, because Ambroxol can cause fibrinolysis and cause re-bleeding. Only treat Ambroxol for a short time, if the patient does not improve the symptoms need to be re-examined.
Patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment who need to take Ambuxol under medical supervision should reduce the dose or adjust the duration of use.
For patients with chronic secretion depletion, ciliary disorders or patients with reduced ability to remove sputum, use the drug only when indicated.
The expectorant Ambuxol makes the cough reflex more effective, making it easier to expel the phlegm. Antitussive measures should not be applied, as they cause sputum congestion.
Use in pregnant women: Ambroxol has the ability to cross the placenta. Animal studies have not revealed embryotoxicity. However, there are few data that can evaluate the teratogenic effects when used in humans. It should not be used during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, unless the doctor judges that the benefits outweigh the risks.
Lactation: The drug is excreted in breast milk but usually has no effect on the nursing infant. However, patients should consider using the drug during breastfeeding. Use only when prescribed by a doctor.
Drug interactions:
When taking the drug together with antibiotics such as Amoxicillin, Cefuroxim, Erythromycin, Doxycycline increases the concentration of antibiotics in the lung parenchyma. When used with drugs that have an antitussive effect (such as Codeine), sputum-drying drugs will reduce the ability of the drug to produce sputum or loosen bronchial secretions, thereby causing airway obstruction. Storage conditions: Store in a cool, dry place, avoid moisture, avoid direct sunlight and temperature below 30 degrees Celsius. Keep the medicine out of reach of children.
Above is information about Ambuxol drug, also known as expectorant. Often used in clinical and effective supportive treatment in pathologies in the respiratory tract causing thick sputum. If you have any questions, please consult your doctor and pharmacist directly.
