Atheren is contraindicated in the following cases:
History of allergy or hypersensitivity to histamine and other phenothiazines. Children under 2 years old. Do not use in patients with liver or kidney dysfunction, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, pheochromocytoma, prostate enlargement, myasthenia gravis. History of agranulocytosis. History of glaucoma.

3. How to take Atheren


Atheren is taken orally. Dosage is calculated according to the amount of alimemazine tartrate; if available, convert to alimemazine.
Dosage:
Treatment of urticaria, itchy papules: Adults: 2 tablets/time x 2-3 times/day. In case of persistent symptoms that are difficult to cure: 100 mg/day. Elderly: 2 tablets/time x 1-2 times/day. Children over 2 years old: 2.5 - 5mg/time x 3-4 times/day. Antihistamine, antitussive: Adults: 1-2 tablets/time x 3-4 times/day. Children over 2 years old: 0.5 mg - 1 mg/kg/day, divided into several times. Effects on sleep: Take Atheren once before going to bed. Adults: 5 - 20 mg (1 - 4 tablets) / time. Children over 2 years old: 0.25 - 0.5 mg/kg/day. Atheren overdose and management:
Symptoms of Atheren overdose include drowsiness, loss of consciousness, increased heart rate, hypotension, ventricular arrhythmias, ECG changes and hypothermia. Severe extrapyramidal reactions may occur.
Treatment: if symptoms of Atheren overdose are detected early before 6 hours, it is best to wash the stomach and not to induce vomiting, can give activated charcoal. There is currently no specific antidote for Alimemazine. Patients should receive symptomatic supportive treatment in the hospital.

4. Notes when using Atheren


Caution when using Atheren for the elderly, especially when it is too hot or too cold, because it increases the risk of orthostatic hypotension, drowsiness, dizziness, constipation. Atheren may cause drowsiness during the first few days of treatment. Atheren may affect the results of skin tests for allergens. Avoid concomitant use of Atheren with alcohol or other CNS depressants. Atheren contains the excipient lactose, so it should not be used in patients with rare hereditary problems such as lactose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption. Ability to drive and use machines: Atheren may cause drowsiness, so care should be taken when using the drug to drive and operate machinery. Drowsiness is increased with concomitant use of alcoholic beverages. It is best to start the treatment of allergic manifestations with Atheren in the evening. Pregnant women: There have been reports of Alimemazine causing jaundice, extrapyramidal symptoms in infants whose mothers used Alimemazine during pregnancy. Do not use Atheren for pregnant women, unless necessary and prescribed by a doctor. Lactation: Atheren may be excreted in human milk. Atheren is contraindicated in nursing women, and breastfeeding may be discontinued while taking the drug.

5. Undesirable effects when using Atheren


Some unwanted symptoms may be encountered when using Atheren such as: Fatigue, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, eye disorder, dry mouth, increased mucus in bronchial secretions, constipation, urinary retention. Some other rare symptoms: Decreased blood pressure, increased heart rate, agranulocytosis, leukopenia, cholestatic hepatitis, extrapyramidal symptoms, restlessness, Parkinson's tremor, decreased seizure threshold in epilepsy, acute dystonia.

6. Drug interactions


Alcohol: Increases the sedative effect of Alimemazine, do not drink alcohol while taking Atheren. Barbituric and other sedative hypnotics: Increases the CNS depressant and respiratory depression effects of Atheren. Antihypertensives, especially alpha-adrenergic receptor blockers: Increased antihypertensive effect when combined with Alimemazine. Other Anticholinergics: Atheren enhances anticholinergic effects when combined with these drugs. Antacids, Parkinson's drugs, lithium: Prevents the absorption of Atheren. High doses of Alimemazine reduce the response to hypoglycemic agents. Levodopa: Concomitant use with Atheren may inhibit the anti-Parkinsonian effects of Levodopa by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain.
