Cefuroxime axetil is a prodrug of cefuroxime, so it has little antibacterial activity if not hydrolyzed to cefuroxime after absorption.

Cefuroxime has a specific ability against many common pathogens due to its effective antibacterial activity. Particularly against beta-lactamase/cephalosporinase-producing strains of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. In addition, cefuroxime is also very stable to many beta-lactamase enzymes of gram-negative bacteria.

The drug is used in the treatment of a number of respiratory or urinary tract diseases such as:

The active ingredient cefuroxime is an acetoxymethyl ester that is taken orally in pill or suspension form.
For adults: Adults use a dose of 250mg orally every 12 hours to treat tonsillitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis caused by sensitive bacteria.
Doses of 250 mg or 500 mg orally every 12 hours in acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis or in patients with acute bronchitis secondary to bacterial infection or uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections.
Doses of 125mg or 250mg orally every 12 hours in patients with uncomplicated urinary tract infections. Women with uncomplicated cervical or urethral gonorrhea or uncomplicated rectal gonorrhea 1g single dose.
For children, tonsillitis, pharyngitis: 20mg/kg/day, twice a day with a maximum total dose of 500mg/day or take one 125mg tablet every 12 hours.
Impetigo, otitis media use dose 30mg/kg/day with a maximum dose of 1g/day used twice/day. In tablet form is 250 mg orally every 12 hours.
The usual course of treatment for cezirnate is 7 days. It should be noted that the film-coated tablet form and oral suspension are not bioequivalent, so they are not interchangeable in terms of mg/mg correlation.
In addition, cefuroxime can also be used by injection as the sodium salt. The drug is indicated in cases of severe or complicated infections by deep intramuscular injection or slow intravenous injection over 3 to 5 minutes or intravenous infusion.
For adults, a dose of 750 mg is usually used every 8 hours. If the infection is more severe, it can be given intravenously at a dose of 1.5 g every 8 or 6 hours. For young children, a dose of 30mg to 60mg/kg per day is recommended. In special cases, it can be increased to 100 mg/kg/day and divided into 3-4 small doses. Newborns can be given the same total daily dose and divided into 2 or 3 smaller doses.

The side effects of the active ingredient cefuroxime axetil are usually mild and last for a short time. In a small number of cases, gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea and vomiting have been reported. Some reports suggest that cefuroxime, like other broad-spectrum antibiotics, has a low incidence of pseudomembranous colitis.
