Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces gastric acid secretion by inhibiting a specific enzyme in the parietal cells of the stomach. Esomeprazole is the S-isomer of omeprazole, converted by protons to an active inhibitor in the acidic environment of the parietal cells of the stomach, the free form of sulphenamide.
