2. Exatus 200 medicinal uses

The drug is used for two main purposes: expectorant and detoxifying when overdose of paracetamol. The drug reduces the viscosity of sputum in the lungs by cleaving the disulfide bridges in the mucoproteins and facilitates the expulsion of sputum by coughing or drainage or by mechanical means. Acetylcysteine protects the liver in paracetamol overdose by maintaining liver glutathione concentrations, which is a necessary substrate to inactivate the intermediate metabolite of paracetamol which is toxic to the liver. Acetylcysteine is converted to cysteine, which stimulates the liver to synthesize glutathione, thereby protecting the liver if treatment is started within 12 hours of paracetamol overdose.
After oral administration, acetylcysteine is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, peak concentrations about 0.5 - 1 hour after oral doses of 200 to 600 mg. The half-life of Exatus 200 is approximately 6.25 hours.
