PGT-A and things to know

Article written by BS. Nguyen Thi Cam Van - IVF lab doctor - Reproductive Center, Reproductive Support Center - Vinmec Times City International Hospital.

PGT-A stands for preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy. Previously, this test was called PGS (preimplantation genetic screening).

1. Who is designated to perform PGT-A?

The purpose of the PGT-A test is to screen for chromosomal abnormalities to select embryos with a normal set of chromosomes, then transfer them back to the mother in the hope of increasing the chances of pregnancy and healthy baby for the couple.
The treating doctor may order a PGT-A test for couples carrying one of the following factors:
Older mother (>35 years old) Having failed embryo transfer from 2 times Have had two or more miscarriages or stillbirths Have been pregnant or given birth to a child with a genetic abnormality The husband's sperm sample is low, weak, or severely malformed

2. How is PGT-A performed?

To perform the PGT-A test, the couple needs to undergo a cycle of IVF to create an embryo, when the embryo develops to the 5th day, the embryo will be biopsied to remove 3-5 trophoblast cells. This sample of cells is then sent to a genetic diagnostic center for testing. The embryos after the biopsy will be frozen for transfer to the next cycle.
For cases of rapid PGT-A, embryos after biopsy will be cultured until the next morning, screening results will be returned after 24 hours and embryos will be transferred to the mother's uterus as soon as possible. result.

3. What are the risks of PGT-A?

In addition to the same risks as a regular IVF cycle, couples assigned to PGT-A need further counseling about some of the risks of this test before going into the process. . These risks may arise during embryo biopsy or screening. For day 5 embryos, embryo biopsy did not negatively affect embryo quality and development.
However, cell samples taken for screening may not be of sufficient quality for cloning and interpretation of results. Then the embryo will not be screened and the couple may face the risk of embryo destruction.
PGT-A test only detects chromosome number abnormalities (Down syndrome, Turner syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome,...), while monogenic and structural abnormalities cannot be detected.

4. Cost of implementing PGT-A?

In addition to the cost of performing a regular IVF cycle, a couple needs to pay an additional cost to perform an embryo biopsy and a cell sample screening test. Actual costs will depend on the number of biopsied embryos and the couple's wishes.
