Oxaprozin: Uses, indications and cautions when using

NSAIDs are a group of pain relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs that are widely used today. There are many different active ingredients in this group of drugs and one of them is the drug Oxaprozin. So what effect does Oxaprozin have and what problems should be noted when using it?

1. What does Oxaprozin do?

Oxaprozin is a medicine used to treat arthritis, to reduce swelling, pain, and stiffness. Oxaprozin belongs to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). If you are being treated for a chronic condition such as arthritis, you should talk to your doctor about non-pharmacological treatments and/or the use of other medications to treat pain.

2. How to use Oxaprozin

Read and learn the instructions for use provided by your pharmacist before you start taking Oxaprozin . If you have any questions about Oxaprozin, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Oxaprozin is to be taken by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually once daily and should be taken with plenty of water (about 240 ml) unless directed otherwise by your doctor. Patients should not lie down for about 10 minutes after taking Oxaprozin. In case of stomach pain while using Oxaprozin, the patient should take the drug with food, milk or take antacids. The dose of Oxaprozin is indicated based on the degree of joint pain, swelling, body weight and the individual patient's response to the drug. The manufacturer recommends a maximum adult dosage of 1,800 mg or 26 mg/kg body weight per day.
To reduce the risk of side effects (such as stomach bleeding), use Oxaprozin at the lowest effective dose for the shortest time possible. Absolutely do not arbitrarily increase the dose of Oxaprozin or use it more times a day than directed. For chronic conditions like arthritis, patients need to carefully follow their doctor's instructions.
In certain conditions (such as arthritis), Oxaprozin may take up to 2 weeks of continuous use for patients to see full effects.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (including oxaprozin) may increase the risk of acute coronary artery disease or stroke, which can occur at any time, but the risk is higher if the patient has been taking the drug during long time.
Higher risk is common in older adults or people with a history of heart disease or cardiovascular risk factors (eg, smoking, family history of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure or diabetes) ). Another important note is that patients should not take Oxaprozin immediately before or after coronary bypass surgery (CABG). In addition, Oxaprozin can cause serious bleeding in the stomach or intestines. This undesirable effect can occur without warning symptoms at any time while taking Oxaprozin . Elderly people are more susceptible to this serious side effect of Oxaprozin .
Stop using oxaprozin and get medical help right away if a patient notices any of the following rare but serious side effects:
Bloody or black/tarry stools; Persistent epigastric or abdominal pain; Vomiting vomit that looks like coffee grounds; Severe pain in the chest behind the sternum; Shortness of breath; Unusual sweating, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes, difficulty speaking. Some other common side effects of Oxaprozin:
Abdominal discomfort; Constipation ; Diarrhea ; Nausea, vomiting; Flatulence, heartburn; Sleepy; Dizziness or headache. Remember that the doctor prescribed Oxaprozin because they judged the benefit to the patient to outweigh the risk of side effects. Get medical help right away if patient has any symptoms of liver damage, including: dark urine, persistent nausea/vomiting/loss of appetite, severe abdominal pain, yellowing eyes/skin .
Serious allergic drug reactions to Oxaprozin are very rare. However, if the patient has signs such as rash, itching and swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), dizziness, trouble breathing... while taking Oxaprozin, call your doctor immediately for treatment. mind. In addition to the side effects listed above, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any other unusual signs while using Oxaprozin.

Before using Oxaprozin, women of childbearing age should talk to their doctor about the benefits and risks, and tell the doctor if the patient is pregnant, plans to become pregnant, or suspects pregnancy. Oxaprozin can harm an unborn baby and cause problems with normal delivery. Therefore, it is not recommended for use during pregnancy from 20 weeks until delivery. If the physician decides to administer Oxaprozin between the 20th and 30th weeks of pregnancy, the patient should use the lowest effective dose of Oxaprozin for the shortest possible duration of treatment.
