Uses of Sagacid

Sagacid is an antisecretory drug used by injection, usually indicated for short-term treatment of pathologies causing increased gastric secretion that oral administration does not bring the desired effect.

1. What is Sagacid?

Sagacid main ingredient is Pantoprazol 40mg. Pantonova is prepared in the form of lyophilized powder for injection. Pantoprazole is a selective proton pump inhibitor with specific inhibitory effects, due to its selective effect on gastric parietal cells. The drug has an anti-secretory effect on gastric acid for 24 hours. The drug has little effect on the total amount of gastric juice, pepsin secretion, intrinsic factor and does not affect gastric contractility.

2. What diseases does Sagacid treat?

2.1. Indications Sagacid is indicated in the following cases:
Used for short-term treatment (7-10 days) for patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with a history of erosive esophagitis . Pathological gastrointestinal hypersecretion due to Zollinger-Ellison syndrome or hypersecretion due to other proliferative conditions. Sagacid is not contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to Pantoprazole or to any of its ingredients.

3. Dosage and how to use Sagacid

3.1 Method of Administration The drug should be administered intravenously or intravenously only. This infusion is performed by qualified medical personnel.
Intravenous injection: Mix 40mg lyophilized powder vial with 10ml of 0.9% NaCl solution to achieve a concentration of 4mg/ml. The injection is then administered slowly intravenously and should be administered over at least 2 minutes. Intravenous infusion: Mix the powder with 100ml of 0.9% NaCl solution, or 5% dextran or Ringer Lactate solution. The reconstituted solution should be infused intravenously over at least 15 minutes. Note that the reconstituted solution should not be mixed with other drugs, after infusion should be rinsed with a suitable solution. Patients should use within 6 hours of reconstitution and preferably immediately after reconstitution to minimize the risk of infection. Use half the volume after reconstitution if only 20 mg pantoprazole is to be used, discard the unused portion of the solution.
3.2 Dosage For adults:
Stomach ulcer, duodenal ulcer, esophagitis, moderate to severe esophageal reflux: The recommended intravenous dose is 1 vial of Sagacid (equivalent to 40 mg). Pantoprazole) and administered once daily. The duration of the drug is about 7 to 10 days. In this case, using more than 10 days is not enough data.
Treatment of persistent Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and proliferative hypersecretion:
Patients are usually started with the recommended daily dose of 80 mg of pantoprazole given intravenously. The dose can then be adjusted up or down as required based on the quantitative results of gastric acid secretion. In cases where a rapid effect of acid control can be achieved, an initial dose of 160 mg twice daily is recommended, but not for long-term use. Pantoprazole should be switched from parenteral to oral as soon as possible when the patient responds to oral medication. The duration of use as indicated in this case for the usual injection is about 7-14 days, not prolonged use. People with severe liver failure: It is necessary to reduce the dose or use it every other day. The maximum dose for severe liver failure is 20 mg/day or 40 mg once every 2 days.
Children: Not recommended, as safety and efficacy have not been established in studies.

4. Side effects of the drug Sagacid

Sagacid is a fairly well tolerated drug. The majority of side effects are mild and moderate in severity. The most common side effects are related to the dose and duration of the drug. Some of the side effects that may be experienced during administration have been reported including:
Body-wide reactions: Fatigue, dizziness, weakness, increased sweating are common side effects. , insomnia. Rarely, drug-induced febrile reactions, hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis and peripheral edema have been reported. Very rarely, chest pain (below the sternum) and hot flushes are seen. Cardiovascular: Rarely causes hypertension. Very rarely, reports of heart failure have been reported. Headache, dizziness. Less commonly, motor deficits and voice changes. Digestive system: gas, constipation or diarrhea, bloating, flatulence, dry mouth and upper abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Rarely stomatitis, rectal disorders and colon polyps are caused. Very rarely, stool discoloration and increased salivation have been reported; Other: Muscle pain, joint pain, interstitial nephritis, hematuria, hyponatremia... Some side effects not mentioned above may also occur when taking Sagacid. You should inform your doctor about the side effects you experience while taking Sagacid.

5. Note when using Sagacid

Before taking drugs with proton pump inhibitors, gastric acid secretion antagonists, the patient must be excluded the possibility of stomach cancer, because when using drugs, it may lead to masking symptoms, delaying during the diagnosis of gastric cancer. Use caution when using drugs for people with liver disease such as cirrhosis, severe liver failure and when using, must monitor liver function; people at risk of bone fractures; risk of gastrointestinal infections. Some reports on the use of the drug show that prolonged use increases the risk of abnormal tumors in the gastrointestinal tract, increases the risk of hypomagnesaemia, gastrointestinal infections. There are no adequate studies performed with pantoprazole in pregnant women. The drug should only be used when clearly needed during pregnancy. In studies, the drug was excreted in the milk of rats. But it is not known whether pantoprazole can be excreted in breast milk. Based on the possible carcinogenicity of pantoprazole in rats, a careful decision should be made between discontinuation of nursing or discontinuation of the drug. Drug interactions can occur when drugs are used concurrently. Some drugs that can interact with pantoprazole are reported as proton pump inhibitors, Theophylline, Ketoconazole, antipyrin, Antanazavir, Diclofenac, diazepane...
Sagacid is a drug that is administered intravenously and is used in medical facilities under the supervision of a physician. Patients do not take long-term drugs and need to switch to oral drugs when clinically allowed.
