Supertrim is a mixture of Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim. In particular, Sulfamethoxazol is a sulfonamide, inhibiting the synthesis of folic acid by bacteria. Trimethoprim is a pyrimidine derivative that inhibits the bacterial enzyme dihydrofolate reductase. The combination of these 2 active ingredients inhibits 2 consecutive stages of folic acid metabolism, inhibits the synthesis of purine, thymine and bacterial DNA. From there, it helps to kill bacteria and fight the development of drug-resistant bacteria, making the drug effective immediately.
Supertrim drug is indicated for infections caused by bacteria sensitive to 2 active ingredients Sulfamethoxazol and Trimethoprim. Specifically:
Infections of the urinary tract - genitals: Prostatitis, urinary tract infections; Chronic and recurrent urinary tract infections in female adults; Respiratory tract infections: Acute sinusitis in adults, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, acute pneumonia or acute otitis media in children; Gastrointestinal infections: Typhoid fever, bacillus dysentery.

How to use: Powder for oral use. The drug is diluted with water to drink, preferably warm water. The right time to take Supertrim is after eating.
Dosage:
Dosage for urinary tract - genital infections:
Adults: Take 2 sachets x 2 times/day (12 hours apart) for 10 days or 1 dose of 4 packs, treat at least 3 or 7 days; Children: Oral 40mg sulfamethoxazol + 8mg trimethoprim/kg/time x 2 times/day (12 hours apart) for 10 days. Dosage for chronic recurrent urinary tract infections in adult women: Take 1-2 sachets/day or take 1-2 packets/time with a frequency of 1-2 times/week.
Dosage for respiratory infections:
Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis in adults: Take 2-3 packs/time, 2 times/day for 10 days; Acute otitis media or pneumonia in children: Oral 40mg sulfamethoxazole + 8mg trimethoprim/kg in 24 hours, divided into 2 times (12 hours apart) for 5-10 days. Dosage for gastrointestinal infections:
Bacillary dysentery in adults: Take 2 sachets/time, 2 times/day (12 hours apart) for 5 days; Bacillary dysentery in children: Oral 40mg sulfamethoxazol + 8mg trimethoprim/kg in 24 hours, divided into 2 times (12 hours apart) for 5-10 days. Overdose: Manifestations of drug overdose include: Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, unconsciousness, headache, hematopoietic disorders, jaundice, myelosuppression,... Treatment is to induce vomiting, wash gastric acid and urine acidification to enhance elimination of Trimethoprim. If there are signs of myelosuppression, the patient is prescribed leucovorin 5-15 mg/day until hematopoietic recovery.
Missed dose: When a dose of Supertrim is forgotten, the patient should take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the scheduled time.

When using Supertrim, patients may experience some side effects such as:
Common: Fever, nausea, vomiting, glossitis, diarrhea, itchy skin,...; Uncommon: Skin urticaria, eosinophilia, neutropenia, leukopenia, purpura; Rare: Anaphylaxis, serum sickness, hemolytic anemia, megaloblastic anemia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, pancytopenia, jaundice, hepatic cholestasis, necrosis liver, hypoglycemia, hyperkalemia, hallucinations, kidney failure, kidney stones, interstitial nephritis, tinnitus,... When experiencing side effects after taking Supertrim, patients should inform their doctor to treated.

Contraindications to using Supertrim:
People who are sensitive to active ingredients in the drug; In patients with severe renal impairment, plasma concentrations of the drug cannot be monitored; People with megaloblastic anemia caused by folic acid deficiency; Pregnant and lactating women; Children under 2 months old. Use with caution when using Supertrim:
Risk of impaired renal function; Elderly patients or long-term use of high-dose drugs are prone to folic acid deficiency; Dehydration; Malnutrition ; The drug can cause hemolytic anemia in patients with G6PD deficiency; Supertrim should not be used by pregnant or lactating women.

Some drug interactions Supertrim patients need to pay attention:
Taking Supertrim with diuretics (especially thiazides) may increase the risk of thrombocytopenia in the elderly; The drug may decrease the elimination and increase the effect of methotrexate; Concomitant use of Supertrim with pyrimethamine 25mg/week increases the risk of megaloblastic anemia; Supertrim inhibits the metabolism of phenytoin in the liver, possibly increasing the effect of phenytoin; Supertrim may prolong the prothrombin time in patients taking warfarin. Supertrim is indicated for the treatment of respiratory tract infections, infections of the genitourinary tract, urinary tract and digestive tract.
