1. Composition and Uses of Esperal 500mg Tablets
Esperal 500mg tablets contain 500mg of Disulfiram as the active ingredient. Disulfiram is a substance that inhibits the metabolism of alcohol at the acetaldehyde stage, leading to the accumulation of acetaldehyde in the body when the patient drinks alcohol.
When using Esperal 500mg, the high acetaldehyde concentration in the body causes uncomfortable symptoms such as: hot flashes, nausea, vomiting, severe headaches, thirst, chest tightness, shortness of breath, etc. These symptoms will make it impossible for the patient to continue drinking alcohol, gradually leading to alcohol cessation.
2. Indications and Contraindications of Esperal 500mg Tablets
Esperal 500mg is indicated for the treatment of chronic alcohol addiction.
This drug is contraindicated in the following situations:
- Use of metronidazole, paraldehyde, or any medications containing alcohol (e.g., cough syrup, etc.)
- Cardiomyopathy or severe coronary artery obstruction
- Mental disorders
- Alcohol poisoning or consumption of alcohol or alcoholic beverages within the last 12 hours
- Hypersensitivity to disulfiram or any other components of the medication.
3. How to Use Esperal 500mg Tablets
Esperal 500mg tablets should be taken orally. The tablet should not be chewed.
Dosage:
- The initial dose is 250-500mg per day for 1-2 weeks.
- The maintenance dose is adjusted according to the patient’s response and tolerance to the medication, usually ranging from 125-500mg per day.
- If treatment does not show effectiveness after 6 months, a switch to a different alcohol cessation medication may be necessary. However, patients should consult with their doctor before stopping or changing the medication.
4. Precautions When Using Esperal 500mg Tablets
- Do not use the medication if alcohol or alcoholic beverages have been consumed within the last 12 hours. Some experts recommend waiting at least 48 hours after drinking before using Esperal. The effects of the medication may last up to 14 days after use if the patient consumes alcohol.
- Some side effects may occur, including a metallic taste in the mouth, hepatitis, liver enzyme changes, allergic reactions such as rash, itching, central nervous system reactions like fatigue, headaches, blurred vision, and seizures.
- There is limited research data on the safety of the drug in special populations such as pregnant or breastfeeding women. Therefore, it is not recommended to use the medication in these cases unless prescribed by a doctor.
