Celecoxib can interact with many different drugs, leading to increased or decreased effects and unwanted effects of one or both drugs. Therefore, it is necessary to inform your doctor about any drugs or functional foods you are using before starting to take celecoxib.

1. What Is Vicoxib 200mg?

The active ingredient in Vicoxib 200mg is Celecoxib, which inhibits an enzyme called cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). This enzyme plays a role in producing compounds that cause inflammation and pain in the body. By blocking COX-2, celecoxib exerts pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects.

2. Indications and Contraindications for Vicoxib 200mg

Indications

Vicoxib 200mg is prescribed for:

  • Symptomatic relief of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.
  • Acute pain management, including postoperative and dental pain.
  • Primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain relief).

Contraindications

Vicoxib should not be used in the following cases:

  • Hypersensitivity to celecoxib or sulfonamides.
  • Severe heart failure.
  • Severe renal impairment.
  • Severe hepatic impairment.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis).
  • Active peptic ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding.
  • Pain management following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
  • History of asthma, acute rhinitis, nasal polyps, angioedema, urticaria, or other allergic reactions to aspirin or NSAIDs, including COX-2 inhibitors.

There is limited research on the effects of celecoxib during pregnancy. It should only be used if the benefits outweigh potential risks to the fetus. Celecoxib must not be used in the third trimester of pregnancy.

A small amount of Vicoxib may pass into breast milk. Due to the potential risks to breastfeeding infants, a decision should be made to either discontinue the medication or stop breastfeeding, depending on the mother's treatment needs.

3. Dosage and Administration of Vicoxib 200mg

Always follow your doctor’s prescription. The usual recommended doses are:

  • Osteoarthritis (Adults): 200mg once daily or 100mg twice daily.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (Adults): 100–200mg twice daily.
  • Ankylosing spondylitis: 200mg once daily or 100mg twice daily. Some patients may require 400mg per day.
  • Acute pain and dysmenorrhea:
    • Initial dose: 400mg.
    • If needed, an additional 200mg may be taken on the first day.
    • Subsequent doses: 200mg twice daily as needed.
  • Elderly patients (<50kg): Should start with the lowest recommended dose.

4. Drug Interactions with Celecoxib

Medications That Reduce Celecoxib’s Effectiveness:

  • Some antihypertensive drugs
  • Diuretics

⚠️ Taking celecoxib with these medications may also increase the risk of kidney-related side effects.

Medications That Increase the Risk of Side Effects When Used with Celecoxib:

  • Aspirin
  • Lithium
  • Warfarin and other anticoagulants

Medications That May Enhance Celecoxib’s Side Effects:

  • Fluconazole

5. Side Effects of Vicoxib 200mg

When used at recommended doses for short-term treatment, Vicoxib generally has a low incidence of side effects.

Common Side Effects

Gastrointestinal symptoms:

  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Indigestion
  • Bloating

To reduce these symptoms, take the medication after meals.

Serious Gastrointestinal Risks

  • Stomach ulcers
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding

⚠️ Risk increases with higher doses and prolonged use.

To minimize gastrointestinal side effects:

  • Avoid alcohol while taking Vicoxib.
  • Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration.
  • Do not combine Vicoxib with corticosteroids (e.g., prednisolone) or anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin, Pradaxa, or Xarelto).

Effects on Blood Pressure

  • Celecoxib may increase blood pressure.
  • If you have pre-existing hypertension, monitor blood pressure regularly.
  • Discontinue use if blood pressure rises excessively.

Other Common Side Effects

  • Skin reactions: Itching, rash
  • Respiratory symptoms: Cough, sore throat, sinusitis
  • Neurological symptoms: Dizziness, insomnia
  • Fluid retention: Swelling, especially in the ankles
  • Urinary tract infections
