Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bùi Văn Giang is an expert in Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology with over 30 years of experience.
He was the first in Vietnam to introduce the technique of Meckel’s cave alcohol injection (in the skull base) under digital subtraction angiography (DSA) guidance for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, bringing relief to many patients suffering from “suicide disease.”
Dr. Giang also applied the celiac plexus neurolysis technique to relieve pain in patients with pancreatic, liver, and gastric cancers.
Pain management techniques for musculoskeletal disorders—such as neck pain, sciatica, and low back pain—have been systematically implemented by Dr. Giang and his colleagues and are highly appreciated by patients.
After graduating from the Residency Program at Hanoi Medical University, Dr. Giang spent two years training in France, followed by multiple short-term courses in Europe, the United States, and other countries in the region, including Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. He also completed several fellowships in pain intervention at leading U.S. centers such as Mayo Clinic, Pain Management Center of BWH, Oregon, and MD Anderson.
His PhD research focused on intracranial vascular embolization. The technique of fistula embolization for carotid–cavernous sinus (FCC) malformation has completely changed the prognosis for patients with this condition.
The technique of vertebral cementoplasty for spinal pain caused by osteoporosis was also successfully implemented by Dr. Giang and his colleagues, and is now widely adopted across Vietnam.
Dr. Giang previously served as Head of the Diagnostic Imaging Department at Saint Paul Hospital, Deputy Director of Saint Paul Hospital, Director of the Diagnostic Imaging Center at K Hospital, and Senior Lecturer at Hanoi Medical University.
Since his residency years in 1994, Dr. Giang has been associated with Bach Mai Hospital, a challenging clinical environment. There, he not only participated in patient care but also began teaching medical students and residents from Hanoi Medical University at an early stage.
In 2003, he moved to Saint Paul Hospital, where he and his colleagues successfully introduced numerous vascular and pain intervention techniques, many of which have since been transferred and widely applied nationwide.
After 13 years at Saint Paul Hospital, Dr. Giang worked at the Diagnostic Imaging Center of K Hospital, where many late-stage cancer patients suffered from pain even more terrifying than death. Numerous pain management techniques were effectively implemented there.
Currently, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bùi Văn Giang is Director of the Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology Division at Vinmec Healthcare System, and concurrently Head of the Radiology Department at the College of Health Sciences, VinUniversity.
- Examination and treatment of facial pain, particularly trigeminal neuralgia, using percutaneous intervention under DSA guidance.
- Examination and treatment of spinal pain using minimally invasive interventions under DSA, CT, and ultrasound guidance.
- Diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders and sports medicine injuries.
- Examination and consultation for oncology patients.
After completing his Residency at Hanoi Medical University, Dr. Giang pursued a two-year fellowship in France, followed by multiple short-term training programs in Europe, the United States, and countries in the region such as Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. He has undertaken numerous pain intervention internships at leading U.S. centers, including the Mayo Clinic, the Pain Management Center of Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), Oregon, and MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Dr. Giang’s doctoral thesis focused on intracranial vascular embolization techniques. The technique of carotid–cavernous fistula (CCF) embolization has completely transformed the prognosis for patients suffering from this condition.
The vertebroplasty technique for spinal pain due to osteoporosis was successfully implemented by Dr. Giang and his colleagues and has since been widely adopted throughout Vietnam.
