No one can deny the importance of talking to children. However, it is important to be clear about how we are talking to children. There are two habits we easily come across: talking too much and talking nonsense to children.
Studies have shown that children learn language best when they hear sentences 1-2 words longer than the ones they are saying. Usually when talking, children need time to process information to see what the content adults want to convey. The child then needs to find the right word to respond. Accordingly, with long sentences, children need more time to understand and respond. Even, in some cases, children still have difficulty in grasping the main message that parents want to convey due to ... talking too much.
In terms of small talk, a common example is greetings. It is not difficult to come across a situation where when meeting an acquaintance, the parents immediately say: "I say hello to Uncle XYZ, have you said hello yet" and are impatient when they do not see their child speak as soon as the parents finish.
