1. What is Expas 40?

Expas with the main ingredient is Drotaverin - a derivative of isoquinolin, which has antispasmodic effects on smooth muscle due to inhibition of PDE IV. This is an enzyme with muscle relaxant properties and anti-inflammatory activity.
The drug is indicated in cases of smooth muscle spasms of both nervous and muscular origin. The action of Expas on smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract, biliary tract, urinary system and blood vessels is independent of the autonomic distribution to the muscles. Drotaverin contained in Expas has no anticholinergic effects.
Expas rapidly absorbed after oral administration equivalent to parenteral route. The drug concentration in the blood reaches a maximum in about 45 - 60 minutes after taking it. The drug is metabolised in and excreted in the urine.

2. Indications of Expas

Expas 40mg is indicated in the following cases:
Biliary colic due to biliary tract diseases: peri-gallstone inflammation, gallstones, cholecystitis, bile duct stones, cholangitis, pancreatitis. Smooth muscle spasm of the urinary tract: Bladder spasm, kidney stones, ureteral stones, cystitis, pyelonephritis. Abdominal pain caused by spasm of gastrointestinal smooth muscle: Gastritis, peptic ulcer, irritable bowel syndrome, spasm of the cardia and pylorus, enteritis, colitis, constipation,. Gastrointestinal spasms. Irritable bowel syndrome. Uterine muscle spasms due to menstrual pain, uterine contractions, symptoms of threatened miscarriage.

3. Contraindications of Expas

Expas 40mg is contraindicated for use in the following cases:
Allergy to one of the ingredients of the drug. Children under 12 years old. Patients with impaired liver and kidney function, severe liver failure, severe renal failure. Patients with heart failure, atrioventricular block II - III (on electrocardiogram). Attention when using Expas
Patients with low blood pressure should use it with caution. Expas contains lactose and therefore may not be suitable for patients with lactase deficiency, galactose intolerance, or glucose/galactose malabsorption There is no evidence of teratogenicity or embryotoxicity with Expas. However, when used for pregnant women should be cautious. Women who are breastfeeding are not recommended of taking the drug. Drug interaction Expas with some other drugs
When used together with levodopa, the drug reduces the anti-Parkinsonian effect, increases tremors, muscle spasticity.

4. Dosage and how to use Expas

How to take
Expas 40mg is taken orally. Take the medicine before or after a meal.
Dosage Adults: Take 1-2 tablets 3 times a day. Children > 12 years old: Take 1-2 tablets/time x 2 times/day. Children > 6 years old: Take 1 tablet/time x 2-5 times/day.. Children from 1 to 6 years old: Take 1⁄2 - 1 tablet/time x 2-3 times/day.

5. Side effects of Expas

When using Expas 40mg, you may experience some unwanted effects
Headache, dizziness, nausea. Thrill, palpitations. Constipation . Lower blood pressure. Nausea, vomiting. Dry mouth feeling. Increase or decrease bowel movements. Anaphylactic reactions, erythema of the skin, swelling of the face, lips, eyelids and tongue. Sleep disorders.
