Inquiry
Hello Doctor,
I am currently 37 weeks pregnant. Yesterday, I underwent a prenatal screening. The doctor stated that my cervix is not yet dilated and that I should expect this to occur within a week. However, today I noticed a small amount of brown mucus discharge resembling what I experienced at 8 weeks of gestation when there was a detachment of the chorionic membrane. Therefore, I would like to inquire whether the brown mucus discharge at 37 weeks of gestation signifies the expulsion of the cervical mucus plug. I have heard from others that following a medical examination, there is an increased risk of preterm labor, which causes me concern. I look forward to your guidance, and thank you, Doctor.

Hello,
In response to your question “Is the brown mucus discharge at 37 weeks of gestation indicative of cervical mucus plug expulsion?”, I would like to elucidate as follows:
Brown discharge is often associated with the expulsion of the cervical mucus plug, which may indicate the initiation of labor; however, the experience varies significantly among individuals. Some may proceed to labor immediately, while others may have to wait for up to a week. The definitive symptoms indicating labor will include abdominal pain, increased uterine contractions, or the expulsion of amniotic fluid.
Given that you are 37 weeks pregnant, if you observe any bleeding or mucus discharge, it is advisable to assess cervical dilation to confirm whether labor has commenced. If labor has indeed begun, admission to the hospital for monitoring will be necessary; however, this should not be categorized as preterm labor since the fetus is nearing maturity. Conversely, if you do not manifest any additional symptoms, you may continue to monitor your condition at home.
