Question
Hello doctor! I gave birth to a 1 year old baby, but since I gave birth, I was addicted to milk tea so I still drink milk tea regularly. Would drinking so much affect my milk quality? (Quality milk tea ensured). I hope doctor can advise me, thank you doctor.

Hello doctor. I have given birth for more than 2 months but I want to drink milk tea. Can I drink it? I heard that during the 3-month and 10-day postpartum period, I cannot drink it or I will have postpartum complications. I am looking forward to hearing your advice. Thank you.

Hello! Thank you for sending your question to Vinmec Healthcare System.
From a nutritional perspective, it is best for breastfeeding mothers not to drink milk tea for many reasons:
- Milk tea contains tannins which will reduce excretion of breast milk. When combining condensed tea with milk, the tannin in the tea will inhibit absorption of calcium, iron, zinc of the body
- Milk tea contains caffeine and fatty acids. Metabolites will be transferred to the infant through breast milk. Caffeine and trans fatty acids will affect the development of the child's nervous system. In addition, children who absorb a lot of caffeine are more irritable and cry more.
Breastfeeding and lactation are very important period because the source of nutrition that the mother takes in will be passed on to the baby to help the development. Therefore, mothers need to have a balanced and reasonable diet, and try to adjust their eating habits scientifically so as not to affect the baby's health . Instead of drinking milk tea, mothers could replace it with hot milk, soy milk, milk for postpartum mothers, or coconut water, orange juice and green vegetable juices will contribute to providing variable types of vitamin, minerals necessary for the body.
With the above information, hopefully mothers will know how to take care of their health and establish a scientific diet . Wish you and your baby good health.
