Frequent Left Flank Pain

Table of content

Pain in the left flank is a common condition that can occur at any age. The causes of left flank pain are varied, so addressing the underlying cause is the most effective and appropriate treatment approach for each specific case.

1. What is left flank pain?

In reality, the symptom of left flank pain often manifests in specific ways. The pain may occur 1 to 2 times or more, affecting the patient's health and daily activities.

In addition to left flank pain, patients may experience symptoms like loss of appetite, bloating, indigestion, altered bowel movements, fatigue, mild fever, jaundice, or unexplained weight loss. Advanced diagnostic methods like ultrasounds, abdominal CT scans, biopsies, and other tests can reveal abnormalities pointing to different underlying causes.

2. Causes of Left Flank Pain

Several conditions can lead to pain in the left flank:

  • Intercostal Neuralgia: This pain starts at a specific point and radiates along the ribs. It is often sharp and stabbing, though not life-threatening. Patients should maintain a calm mindset and consult a doctor for pain relief or anti-inflammatory medications. Symptoms of left flank pain generally subside within two weeks.
  • Colitis or Gastritis: Left flank pain may radiate to other areas, accompanied by digestive symptoms like abdominal pain, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, acid reflux, bloating, and indigestion. Patients often experience changes in bowel habits, with stools ranging from hard to loose or even bloody and mucous-filled. Severe cases, such as stomach perforations or cancer, require immediate medical attention.
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): Short bursts of sharp left flank pain may occur alongside abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, or constipation, especially before or after bowel movements.
  • Pancreatitis: Both acute and chronic pancreatitis cause pain in the left flank. Other symptoms include left-sided abdominal swelling, fever, nausea, and a rapid heart rate. Immediate medical care is essential in these cases.
  • Kidney Stones: This common cause of left flank pain is often associated with urinary issues such as frequent, painful urination or blood in the urine. While the pain may not always be severe, untreated kidney stones can lead to complications like urinary infections, kidney failure, or hydronephrosis.
  • Liver Cancer: Although rare, liver cancer should not be overlooked, as early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes. Symptoms include dull left-sided flank pain, fatigue, jaundice, weight loss, appetite loss, vomiting, and an enlarged liver.

Left flank pain can result from numerous medical conditions, each with varying symptoms and severity. Persistent or severe pain accompanied by other unusual symptoms requires prompt medical evaluation for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
