Table of content

The Vinmec Healthcare System is one of Vietnam’s leading destinations for medical tourism, thanks to its experienced medical specialists, modern hospital facilities, and reasonable treatment costs. To ensure that your medical and wellness journey in Vietnam is as safe, smooth, and effective as possible, it is important to stay informed about the local health situation and take appropriate measures to prevent infectious diseases.

Infectious Disease Situation in Vietnam

Vietnam has a tropical monsoon climate, which creates favorable conditions for certain infectious diseases to occur seasonally. Understanding the local health situation can help travelers take appropriate preventive measures without unnecessary concern:

  • Dengue fever: Dengue is common in many provinces and cities, with cases typically increasing during the rainy season (May to November). The disease is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes.
  • Measles: Although an effective vaccine is available, measles remains endemic in Vietnam and outbreaks may occur when vaccination coverage in the community declines.

Vaccines Travelers Should Consider Before Visiting Vietnam

Completing recommended vaccinations 4–6 weeks before your trip gives your body sufficient time to develop protective immunity. Please refer to the recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Health and Safety Measures During Your Trip

Vaccines cannot protect you against many diseases that may occur in Vietnam, so your personal health and safety practices are also important. To make your medical and travel experience as safe and effective as possible, we recommend following these precautions:

Food and Water Safety: Avoid raw foods and undercooked seafood. Drink bottled water with an intact seal or water that has been properly boiled.

Prevent Mosquito Bites: Use mosquito repellents, wear long-sleeved and light-colored clothing, particularly when going outdoors in the early morning or evening.

Reduce Exposure to Disease-Causing Agents: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

  • Medical advice: If you are traveling to Vietnam for surgery or specialized medical treatment, strictly follow your treating physician’s instructions regarding wound care, hygiene, and nutrition.

Essential Items to Bring

Please refer to the Healthy Travel Packing List for Vietnam for health-related items you may wish to bring on your trip. Discuss with your doctor which items are most important for your individual needs.

Health Monitoring After Your Trip

After returning home, continuing to monitor your health can help identify potential symptoms of infectious diseases during the incubation period:

  1. Monitoring period: Continue to monitor your health for 14–21 days after leaving Vietnam.
  2. Symptoms to watch for:
  • Sudden high fever or chills.
  • Skin rash or redness.
  • Persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, or nausea.
  • Severe headache, pain behind the eyes, or muscle and joint pain.
  • Unusual pain, swelling, or redness at the site of a recent medical procedure, if applicable.
  1. What to do if you develop unusual symptoms: Seek medical attention at the nearest healthcare facility promptly and inform the doctor about your recent travel itinerary and any medical treatment you received in Vietnam.
  2. Support: Our hospital’s international patient care team is always available to provide remote assistance and help retrieve your medical records when needed.
