Viral fever is an acute illness commonly observed in children and the elderly due to their weakened immune systems. The clinical presentation of viral fever can be easily mistaken for other medical conditions. The disease is primarily transmitted via the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts through activities such as talking, eating, and direct contact with an infected person's saliva or nasal discharge. The majority of viral transmission occurs through respiratory droplets expelled during speech, sneezing, coughing, and rhinorrhea. Consequently, the virus can disseminate and cause outbreaks rapidly. Furthermore, indirect transmission can occur via fomites in public settings, such as doorknobs, handrails, or toys. These objects can become contaminated with infectious secretions, leading to transmission upon contact.
Fundamentally, the signs and symptoms of viral fever in children and adults do not differ significantly, commonly presenting with high fever, headache, cough, sneezing, rhinorrhea, nasal congestion, lacrimation, sore throat, vomiting, and diarrhea…However, viral fever tends to be worse in children than in adults.
Upon recognition of viral fever symptoms, patients can usually treat it at home, since it's generally a mild illness. Home treatment includes antipyretic therapy, nutritional support, and fluid repletion. However, in pediatric cases where persistent high fever exceeds two days, prompt medical evaluation at a healthcare facility is warranted to confirm the diagnosis of viral fever and assess for potential complications.
Antipyretic therapy with paracetamol can be administered to treat viral fever at home, and lukewarm compresses can be applied. It's also important to ensure the person with viral fever isn't in a stuffy room.
Patients exhibiting symptoms of viral fever should maintain a diet rich in nutrients, ensure adequate hydration, and consume easily digestible, liquid-based foods to promote recovery. There's no need for strict dietary restrictions, which can hinder the treatment efectiveness
Viral fever is transmissible from person to person. Therefore, adults exhibiting symptoms of viral fever should avoid contact with children, particularly neonates. Similarly, when children present with symptoms of viral fever, they should be kept home from school and avoid crowded public areas to prevent further transmission.
