Rodogyl is an antibiotic with spiramycin of the macrolide class and metronidazole of the nitro5-imidazole class as its active ingredients. This article will provide information about the use of Rodogyl and the precautions when using it.
1. What medication is Rodogyl?
Rodogyl carries the antibacterial effect of spiramycin, and is therefore effective against those causing infections in the oral cavity, including streptococcus (except for group D), Bordetella pertussis, streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis, Chlamydia, Actinomyces, Mycoplasma, Corynebacterium. On the other hand, Gram-negative, aerobic bacillus can be resistant to this bacteria.
Additionally, Rodogyl also contains metronidazole, which has an antibacterial effect against several anaerobic bacillus strains including Clostridium, Bifidobacterium bifidum, C. perfringens, Eubacterium, Pneumosintes, Bacteroides fragilis, Melaninogenicus, Fusobacterium, Veillonella, Peptococcus, Peptostreptococcus. Other facultative anaerobic bacillus can be resistant to this antibiotic.
Therefore, the combination of the two individual active ingredients creates a medication with a synergistic effect, inhibiting certain sensitive bacteria strains.
2. What is the use of Rodogyl?
Rodogyl is indicated based on its antibacterial properties and pharmacokinetics. Normally, it can be prescribed for treatment of acute, chronic, or recurrent oral infections such as:
• Dental abscess, pericoronitis, operculitis, phlegmon, cellulitis.
• Gingivitis, periodontitis.
• Pariotid and submandibular salivary gland infection.
• Preventing local infection after oral procedures.
Contraindications for Rodogyl use includes:
• Patients with history of hypersensitivity to imidazole and/ỏ spiramycin and/or cochineal A excipient.
• Gluten intolerant or hypersensitivity patients.
• Children under 6 years old, as the drug formulation is unsuitable for children this age.

3. How to use Rodogyl appropriately?
The dosage for adults often ranges from 4-6 tablets per day, divided into 2-3 doses. In some serious cases, the dose might increase to 8 tablets per day.
For children, the dosage also depends on their age:
• From 6 to 10 years old: 2 tablets/day
• From 10 - 15 years old: 3 tablets/ day, divided into 3 doses.
Several precautions when using Rodogyl include:
• Avoid using Rodogyl during the first trimester for pregnant women, as the drug can cross the blood-placenta barrier.
• Avoid using Rodogyl when breastfeeding as metronidazole and spiramycin can enter breast milk.
• Stop using the drug when imbalance or dizziness symptoms occur.
• Rodogyl can worsen psychiatric symptoms in patients with stable or progressive central or peripheral nervous system diseases.
• Avoid drinking alcohol while taking the drug as it can cause antabuse side effects.
All of the above information is only for reference, the use of Rodogyl in treatments still needs to be seriously adhered to specialists’ instructions.
