Rights and Responsibilities of Patients and Their Family Members

Please carefully review the Rights and Responsibilities of Patients and Their Family Members to ensure that your rights are protected during medical examination and treatment at Vinmec International General Hospital.

I. Patient and family rights

1. The right to receive examination and treatment on time with optimum care

1.1. Be examined and assessed fully of physical condition and the medical needs.

1.2. Be examined and treated timely; observed and cared for continuously.

1.3. Be examined and treated safely, effectively, and appropriate with the physical condition and medical needs. 

1.4. Be participated in the process of care and treatment; Have the right to accept or refuse the treatment (even for the dying period) and clinical research/ trials at any time.

1.5. Have the right to respond and have comments on the medical services and other services of the hospital.  

1.6. Be respected and assisted in pain management.  

1.7. Have the right to choose the representative to implement and protect the rights and responsibilities during the treatment in hospital. 

1.8. Have the right to choose who will participate in the care process and the extent to which the information is provided to this person.  

1.9. Have the right to receive the priority in accordance with the relevant policies.  

1.10. Be assisted in accessing the medical services outside of the hospital in accordance with the physical condition and needs of patients and their family.  

2. Receive the respect of personal value and trusts

2.1. Be treated with respect, irrespective of age, gender, race, nationality, religion, social status, physical ability, and spirit. 

2.2. Be respected the right to privacy, the need for emotional, social, cultural, religious…

2.3. Medical and personal information are protected. The information is provided only with the acceptance of the patient or in the case required by the law.

2.4. The instructions in detail are specified in Appendix 1 and 2 of this policy.

3. Receive the protection and security

3.1. Have the right to receive visitors during hospital stay according to Vinmec visitation policy.

3.2. Be protected from the risk, assist to protect the valued assets during the stay in Vinmec.

3.3. In case the patient is losing/ lacking mental capacity or is a minor (under 18 years old), his/ her legal representative will act on behalf of the patient.  

3.4. In case of emergency, if the patient does not have the ability to choose the medical services and has no legal representative, the CMO or the authorized person would decide on the implementation of medical examination and treatment. 

4. Receive relevant information

4.1. Be examined and treated by a doctor, consulted and fully explained the medical condition, treatment directions, alternative solutions, likelihood of success, recovery, consequences if not treated and possible risks occurs... in diagnostic methods and treatment. Receive explanations and advice at the time of diagnosis, before any treatment intervention, when there are unusual developments or at the request of the patient and relatives.

4.2. Have the right to access his/ her treatment information within the scope of the law without having to pay any related costs, except for copying request of his/ her medical record according to the instructions in the Guidelines on management and documentation of medical records.

4.3. Be informed and fully explained of the estimated cost of medical services prior to the commencement of the services.

4.4. Information provided to patients and family members must be in a language they can understand prior to making decision of whether or not to accept any medical services.

4.5. Have the right to know the information of the doctor and the medical staff providing the treatmentand care.

4.6. To provide information on specified medication, the effects of conventional and unexpected effects of such medication. 

4.7. Receive health advice and education based on an assessment of health education needs so that patients and their relatives understand and participate in the medical examination and treatment process, and know how to self-care and prevent diseases when medical examination and treatment at the hospital

4.8. Be informed and instructed on how to register any comments or complaints.

Note: In certain cases, the patient may determine what specific information would not be provided to the representative or under what circumstances (Refer to section 1.1 Appendix 1). 

II. The responsibilities of the patient and their family

1. Provide accurate personal information, medical status, and legal representative… as required by hospital. When information needs to be updated, the patient and/ or his/ her family is obliged to notify his/ her healthcare staff.

2. Respect and follow all the hospital policies, especially safety policies.

3. Coordinate and cooperate with healthcare staff during his/ her hospital stay.

4. Settle medical fees in accordance with the hospital billing policies.

5. Respect medical staff and the rights of other patients. 

6. Protect personal properties/ belongings and any hospital assets that he/she is assigned. 

7. Take responsibility when refusing the treatment option or when not following the instructions of the medical staff.
