1. What is Atussin medicine?
Atussin 60ml is formulated as a syrup, making it suitable for children. Atussin 60ml syrup is manufactured by the United Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company. The main ingredients of the medicine include:
- Dextromethorphan HBr:
Dextromethorphan is effective in treating chronic, non-productive cough. At the therapeutic dose, the cough-suppressant effect of the drug lasts for 5–6 hours.
Dextromethorphan HBr is rapidly absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. Its effect begins within 15–30 minutes after ingestion and lasts for 6–8 hours. The drug is metabolized in the liver and excreted in urine both in its unchanged form and as demethylated metabolites, among which dextrophan also has a mild cough-suppressant effect.
- Chlorpheniramine Maleate:
This is an antihistamine with anticholinergic effects, which may vary in intensity among individuals. Chlorpheniramine exerts its antihistamine effect through competitive blockade of H1 receptors on target cells.
The drug is well absorbed following oral administration and reaches plasma levels within 30 to 60 minutes. Peak plasma concentration is reached within 2.5 to 6 hours after ingestion.
- Expectorants
Sodium Citrate has moisturizing properties and plays a role in maintaining pH. Glyceryl Guaiacolate acts as an expectorant by reducing mucus viscosity.

Atussin 60ml syrup is effective in controlling coughs caused by conditions such as colds, flu, tuberculosis, asthma, whooping cough, measles, pneumonia, bronchiolitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, pleurisy, excessive smoking, inhalation of irritants, and psychogenic cough.
