Uses of Kefentech patch

Table of content

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used in various forms and routes of administration. Among them, topical products such as the Kefentech patch are less commonly discussed. So, what is Kefentech, and how does it work?

1. What is Kefentech?

Kefentech patch is a product of JEIL HEALTH SCIENCE INC., distributed in Vietnam through Cát Thành Pharmaceutical Trading Company. Its main active ingredient is Ketoprofen, an NSAID drug, known for its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects.
The Kefentech patch is used for symptomatic treatment of conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, periarthritis of the shoulder joint (manifesting as pain, stiffness, and shoulder numbness), tendinitis or tenosynovitis and muscle pain. Besides, Kefentech is also used for treatment of swelling and pain caused by injuries.
This patch is designed for topical use, where Ketoprofen is absorbed directly through the skin to the affected musculoskeletal area. This localized delivery reduces pain effectively while minimizing the systemic side effects commonly associated with oral or injectable NSAIDs, including Ketoprofen.
Each Kefentech patch measures 10x7 cm and contains 30 mg of Ketoprofen.

2. What are the effects of the Kefentech patch?

The active ingredient in the Kefentech patch is Ketoprofen, which belongs to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) group. Chemically, Ketoprofen is part of the propionic acid class and is a derivative of aryl carboxylic acid. Similar to other NSAIDs, Ketoprofen has three main effects: anti-inflammatory, analgesic (pain relief), and antipyretic (fever reduction).  The anti-inflammatory effect of Ketoprofen is achieved by inhibiting the synthesis of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes.
Ketoprofen effectively relieves mild to moderate pain, particularly in cases involving inflammation. Its analgesic action works on peripheral pain receptors, reducing pain sensitivity by inhibiting the production of prostaglandin F2. This lowers the sensitivity of sensory nerves to inflammatory mediators like bradykinin and serotonin, which are responsible for pain during inflammation.
When applied as a topical patch, Ketoprofen is absorbed slowly through the skin, minimizing the risk of systemic accumulation in the body. The bioavailability of Ketoprofen from the patch is relatively low (about 5% compared to oral forms). This low bioavailability allows the Kefentech patch to effectively target localized areas without causing significant systemic effects.

3. Indications and contraindications of the Kefentech patch

The Kefentech patch is used to alleviate symptoms in the following cases:

  • Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis;
  • Relieving pain, stiffness, and shoulder numbness in patients with periarthritis of the shoulder joint;
  • Tendon sheath inflammation and tendonitis;
  • Muscle pain caused by various conditions;
  • Reducing swelling and pain in bones and joints due to injury.

Similar to other pharmaceutical preparations, the Kefentech patch should not be used in the following cases:

  • Patients with a history of or predisposition to allergic reactions to Ketoprofen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs);
  • Individuals with a history of bronchial asthma attacks or signs of allergic reactions when using Aspirin or other NSAIDs.

4. Instructions for using the Kefentech patch

Patients with appropriate indications should apply the Kefentech patch directly to the affected area. The recommended dosage is 1 patch per application, twice daily.

5. Side effects of Kefentech

Although side effects are relatively rare, patients using the Kefentech patch may still experience some adverse effects, including:

  • Allergic reactions or anaphylaxis, with symptoms such as hives, difficulty breathing, or facial swelling;
  • Local skin reactions at the application site, including dermatitis (causing itching, rash, or blistering) and dry skin.

If any unusual symptoms occur during the use of the Kefentech patch, patients should discontinue use and promptly inform their doctor for further guidance

6. Precautions when using Kefentech

The Kefentech patch, like other anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving medications, is only intended to alleviate symptoms and does not specifically treat the underlying cause of the disease.

  • In cases of joint pain accompanied by infection, patients using the Kefentech patch should be closely monitored. Additionally, suitable antibiotics and antifungal agents should be considered. Patients must remain vigilant for symptoms of infection while using this medication.
  • When combining the Kefentech patch with systemic anti-inflammatory drugs for chronic conditions (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis), careful consideration is required. Physicians should closely monitor patients, especially for any adverse effects.
  • The safety of the Ketoprofen patch for children has not been fully studied.
    Patients should avoid exposing the skin area where the patch is applied to direct sunlight.
  • Do not apply the Kefentech patch near the eyes or directly on the eyes and mucous membranes.
  • Avoid using the patch on open wounds, as it may cause temporary pain or skin irritation. Additionally, do not tightly bandage the area where the patch is applied.
  • The safety of the Kefentech patch during pregnancy has not been fully studied. Pregnant patients should avoid using this medication or apply it sparingly and for short durations if absolutely necessary.  Besides, there are no specific reports on the use of the Kefentech patch during breastfeeding.
  • The Kefentech patch is used to treat symptoms of conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, shoulder periarthritis (manifesting as pain, stiffness, and numbness), tenosynovitis or tendonitis, and muscle pain. It is also used to reduce swelling and pain from injuries. To ensure treatment effectiveness and minimize the risk of unwanted side effects, patients should strictly follow the instructions of their doctor or pharmacist.
