Uses of Nimegen

Table of content
Nimegen is a dermatological medication that contains the active component isotretinoin. It is used to treat severe acne by lowering sebum production and controlling sebaceous gland activity, which helps to reduce scarring and inflammation.

1. What is Nimegen used for?

The main ingredient of Nimegen, Isotretinoin, is a medication used to treat acne. It is specifically prescribed for severe inflammatory acne that leads to scarring caused by excessive sebum secretion and irritation. Isotretinoin helps reduce secretion and stimulate sebaceous glands, effectively reducing scarring. Nimegen is commonly indicated in the following cases:

  • Treatment of severe acne, especially cystic acne, which is resistant or minimally responsive to traditional treatments like topical creams, drying agents or oral/topical antibiotics.
  • After a course of treatment, the medication significantly reduces or improves long-term symptoms.
  • Due to potential adverse reactions, Isotretinoin should only be used for severe, resistant acne.
  • Nimegen is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of its components, as well as in pregnant and breastfeeding women. Additionally, patients should not donate blood while using the medication.

2. Dosage and Administration of Nimegen

Nimegen is formulated as soft capsules for oral administration, taken with meals. Patients must not chew the capsules and should avoid consuming alcohol during treatment. Limiting sun exposure is also recommended, as it may reduce the medication's efficacy. The dosage varies depending on the patient and treatment goals:

  • Initial dose (first 15-20 weeks): 0.5-1 mg/kg/day, divided into two doses daily. Do not exceed 2 mg/kg/day.
  • Typical maintenance dose: 0.1-1 mg/kg/day as directed by a doctor. Discontinue use for at least two months before starting another treatment cycle.
  • Dosage for children over 12 years old: Same as adults
  • Dosage for patients with severe renal impairment: Start with 10 mg/day, gradually increasing to 1 mg/kg/day depending on treatment response.
