What causes sour-smelling armpits?

Table of content

Sour or unpleasant-smelling armpits commonly occur in individuals with excessive sweating. Body odor in the armpits arises when bacteria on the skin’s surface interact with sweat. This can be mitigated by using deodorants, antiperspirants, and maintaining proper hygiene.

1. What is armpit odor?

Armpit odor is a common issue faced by many people, also known as bromhidrosis (body odor). While it can cause discomfort and embarrassment in social interactions, it is typically not a serious concern.

2. What causes armpit odor?

Sour-smelling armpits result from sweat mixing with bacteria on the skin. This condition often affects individuals with hyperhidrosis, mainly in areas such as the hands, feet, and armpits.

There are two primary types of sweat glands: eccrine and apocrine. While eccrine glands are distributed throughout the body, apocrine glands are active in areas with dense hair follicles, such as the groin and armpits. Both types of glands become active at puberty, which is also when body odor typically becomes noticeable.

3. How to treat armpit odor

Treatment for armpit odor depends on its severity and underlying causes, such as poor hygiene, improper product use, or an underlying medical condition.

Using over-the-counter (OTC) deodorants or antiperspirants daily after bathing can help reduce armpit odor. You may need to try different products to find the one that works best for you.
Antiperspirants improve armpit odor by temporarily blocking sweat pores, reducing the amount of sweat on the skin and consequently the odor. Deodorants combat sour-smelling armpits by masking odors with fragrances but do not prevent sweating. Both products often contain alcohol, which creates an acidic environment that inhibits odor-causing bacteria.

If OTC products are ineffective, consult a doctor for prescription deodorants or treatments. Botox, widely known for reducing facial wrinkles, is also used to treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). When injected into sweat glands, Botox can reduce both sweat production and odor. This treatment is especially helpful for those with hyperhidrosis.

However, Botox is not a permanent solution as its effects last only a few months. Repeat injections are required to maintain results.

4. How to prevent armpit odor

Prevent armpit odor with these simple measures:

  • Use soap and bathe after intense activities like exercise or sports to eliminate sweat and bacteria.
  • Choose loose, moisture-wicking materials like cotton or linen to keep the body dry.
  • Shaving or waxing can help reduce bacteria on the skin’s surface, significantly decreasing sour odors.
  • Reducing anxiety can help minimize physiological sweating responses.

If deodorants or antiperspirants do not work, consult a doctor to rule out underlying medical conditions and explore stronger treatment options.
