When should the second pack of oral contraceptive pills be started?

Question

Hello doctor!
I just finished the first pack at the end of last month's cycle. How long should I wait before starting the second pack of the oral contraceptive pills? Since this is my first time using them, I do not fully understand it. I kindly ask the doctor to guide me. Thank you.

Hello doctor. If I have not finished the 28-day pill pack but have started my menstrual cycle, should I begin the new pack on the first day of my cycle? I would appreciate the doctor's guidance. Thank you.

Hello doctor. I would like to ask about how to use the 28-day oral contraceptive pills. I take the first pill at the beginning of my menstrual cycle. If I get my menstrual cycle again the following month, should I still start with the first pill at the beginning of my new cycle? Also, if I have 3 pills remaining at the end of the pack, is that a problem?
I would appreciate your guidance. Thank you.

Hello doctor.  Is it okay if I take the first pill of the first pack of the daily oral contraceptive in the middle of the month (on any day of that month)? Now, I start the first pill of the second pack after taking a 7-day break. Is my contraception still effective? I would appreciate your advice. Thank you.

Answer

Hello!
To ensure the daily oral contraceptive pills are effective in preventing pregnancy, it is important for women to follow the daily usage instructions carefully.

1. For the 21-day pack

How to take the first pack: Take 1 pill daily, starting on the first day of the menstrual cycle, for 21 consecutive days. If menstruation has occurred within the past 5 days, start taking the first pill on the 5th day and continue taking 1 pill daily until the pack is finished. Use a condom or avoid intercourse for the first 7 days of taking the pills.

How to take the second pack: After finishing the first pack, take a 7-day break before starting the second pack, regardless of whether menstruation occurs during this time.

2. For the 28-day pack

The 28-day pack contains 21 active pills and 7 inactive pills (which contain sugar, iron, … but no hormones). The purpose of the 7 inactive pills is to help maintain the habit of taking pills daily and prevent forgetting.

The usage is similar to the 21-day pack: Take the first pill on the first day of the menstrual cycle, one pill per day until the 28 pills in the first pack are finished, then start the second pack… and continue to finish this pack and then move on to the next pack. The use of the second pack does not depend on whether you are menstruating or the timing of your menstruation.
