1. Functions and Responsibilities

The Microbiology Department was established with the following five key functions and responsibilities:

Disease diagnosis: Detect bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites causing infectious diseases.
Treatment support: Identify antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, fungi, and viruses to enable personalized treatment strategies and monitor therapeutic effectiveness.
Disease prevention: Detect pathogens responsible for outbreaks and healthcare-associated infections to support infection prevention and control measures.
Surveillance: Collect and analyze epidemiological data on infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance trends to develop and update treatment guidelines.
Research: Establish a repository of pathogenic microorganisms to support future research opportunities and scientific development.

2. Quality Assurance

The Microbiology Department operates a quality management system in accordance with internationally recognized standards, including:

CAP (College of American Pathologists): A globally leading laboratory accreditation and quality assessment program developed by the College of American Pathologists, contributing to the accuracy, reliability, and consistency of laboratory test results.
ISO 15189: An international standard specifying requirements for quality and competence in medical laboratories, ensuring that laboratory testing activities meet professional and quality management requirements.

The implementation and maintenance of both quality systems demonstrate the Microbiology Department’s commitment to providing accurate, safe, and internationally standardized laboratory services.

3. Headquarters of the Vietnam Society for Clinical Microbiology

The Microbiology Department serves as the headquarters of the Vietnam Society for Clinical Microbiology, contributing to the promotion of professional activities, scientific research, training, and collaboration in the field of clinical microbiology nationwide.

The Microbiology Department provides laboratory services for the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of infectious diseases using modern, automated laboratory systems, ensuring accurate results and rapid turnaround times
Bacterial and fungal culture: Perform bacterial and fungal cultures; identify pathogens using MALDI-TOF technology, which significantly reduces bacterial and fungal identification time from days to minutes through access to databases containing millions of microbial spectra. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing is performed according to international standards to support appropriate antimicrobial selection
Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST): Apply advanced techniques based on international standards to detect antimicrobial resistance, including the detection of antimicrobial resistance genes and other resistance mechanisms
Immunology: Perform serological tests and infectious disease biomarkers, including HIV, HBV, HCV, and other infectious agents, using fully automated immunoassay platforms such as Cobas e801 and Liaison XL
Molecular diagnostics (Real-time PCR): Detect and identify infectious pathogens associated with respiratory infections, meningitis, gastrointestinal infections, sexually transmitted infections, and other infectious diseases using advanced Real-time PCR systems
Fully automated molecular diagnostics: Perform multiplex PCR testing for simultaneous detection of multiple pathogens (up to 34 targets) within a short turnaround time of 60–80 minutes using FDA-cleared platforms, including FilmArray, QIAstat-Dx, and Cobas 5800. These systems enable comprehensive pathogen detection through a closed workflow, providing rapid turnaround times and high diagnostic accuracy
