Dorsal foot edema is a relatively common condition that often receives little attention. In some cases, swelling and itching on the dorsum of the foot may be a symptom of an underlying condition that requires evaluation and treatment. So, how should dorsal foot edema be treated? Dorsal foot edema is considered peripheral edema, which occurs when fluid accumulates in the tissues of the lower extremities. Although it may not be painful, this condition could indicate an underlying serious health issue. Dorsal foot edema often worsens in the evening — commonly as a result of prolonged standing, walking, or excessive fluid intake throughout the day.
