Is it okay to have anal plasma discharge after anal fistula surgery?

Question

Hello doctor,

I recently had surgery for an anal fistula. After three days, I am still experiencing plasma discharge from the anus, along with an unpleasant odor. Is it okay to have anal plasma discharge after this kind of surgery? Should I visit a doctor for a check-up? Thank you.

Answered by Master, Medical Doctor Hoang Duc Nam - Department of General Surgery, Vinmec Nha Trang International General Hospital.

Hello,

With the question "Is it okay to have anal plasma discharge after anal fistula surgery?", the doctor would like to answer as follows:

The specifics of your anal fistula surgery - whether it is a simple or complex fistula, its location, the presence of an abscess near the anus, whether it is a long-term chronic fistula, w hether it passes through the sphincter or is located under the mucosa, and the location of the internal opening of the fistula- have not been mentioned. Evaluating these issues requires a physical examination and a pelvic MRI.

In general, anal surgeries (such as those for hemorrhoids, anal fistula, and perianal abscess) are all left open for healing. It is important to actively clean the surgical site by soaking the wound in a basin of warm water mixed with salt or povidone. Premature closure of the wound should be avoided, as this can easily lead to recurrent abscesses.

A small amount of discharge or blood after hemorrhoid or anal fistula surgery is normal and common. This can occur 10-14 days post-surgery, with the amount gradually decreasing over time.  It is essential that the surgeon thoroughly explains this process to the patient before surgery and provides proper evaluation prior to discharge.

If you still have questions about anal plasma discharge after anal fistula surgery, you can go to a hospital in the Vinmec Health System for further examination and consultation. Thank you for your trust and for sending questions to Vinmec.

Wishing you good health.

Sincerely!
