Non-Penetrative Sexual Activity and Pregnancy Risk: Medical Insights

Inquiry

Hello,

My boyfriend and I engaged in external genital rubbing with only a thin layer of clothing in between. I want to ask whether external genital rubbing can lead to pregnancy. Thank you.

Response

Hello,

Regarding your question, "Can external genital rubbing cause pregnancy?" here is my response:

Pregnancy occurs when sperm enters the vagina, undergoes through the cervix and fallopian tubes, and fertilizes an egg. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to seven days while awaiting ovulation.

If fertilization occurs, the resulting zygote moves to the uterus for implantation, marking the beginning of pregnancy.

When genital rubbing occurs with clothing as a barrier, the likelihood of pregnancy is extremely low. Sperm cannot penetrate multiple layers of fabric, mainly if the material is thick. However, in cases where ejaculation occurs, and the semen comes into direct contact with very thin or porous fabric (such as lace), there is a minimal possibility that sperm could pass through, enter the vaginal canal, and reach the uterus. This risk remains low but may be slightly higher if the encounter takes place during the female partner's ovulation period.

If you have further concerns about pregnancy risks related to external genital contact, consider visiting a Vinmec healthcare facility for a professional evaluation and consultation.

Thank you for trusting Vinmec to answer your question and wishing you good health.

Best regards.
